But what happens when these differences become more extreme? How might they affect the emotional hierarchies within groups over time? In this article, I will explore how sexual inequalities—real or perceived—can modify the emotional hierarchies within groups over time.

Let's take a look at gender-based sexual inequality. Gender inequality is defined as "the state in which access to power, resources, rewards, opportunities, and decision making authority is distributed unequally between individuals because of their gender." This type of inequality has existed for centuries; from the time of Ancient Rome all the way up until today. Women have always been treated as second-class citizens compared to men.

Women were not allowed to vote or own property in many countries until relatively recently. Even now, there are still many places where women don't have equal rights with men. As a result of this longstanding discrimination against females, society has developed a system in which males hold most positions of power while females remain subordinate.

Now let's turn our attention towards sexual orientation. LGBTQ+ people face many challenges that straight individuals do not. They often experience discrimination based on their identity, leading them to feel isolated from mainstream culture.

They may struggle to find employment due to lack of acceptance by potential employers who fear backlash from conservative customers. This leads to financial difficulties that prevent some members of the community from living comfortably. All of these factors contribute to an atmosphere of fear and distrust between those within the community. These feelings can lead to an imbalance of power dynamics when it comes to relationships; one person may be more powerful than another simply because they identify differently. And this imbalance of power can create problems down the line.

Sexual inequalities also affect interpersonal communication within groups. People tend to gravitate toward those who share similar interests or backgrounds—this is known as "homophily." When you add in sexuality into the mix, homophily becomes even stronger. If two people belong to different sexual orientations, they may feel uncomfortable speaking about intimate topics for fear of being misunderstood or judged. Or if they do speak up, they may feel like they need to censor themselves out of respect for others. Eventually, this leads to a divide between the two sides wherein each group is unable to communicate effectively with one another.

This division could cause emotional hierarchies to form within groups as well.

There is the issue of privilege within a relationship. In heterosexual couples, one partner usually has more power than the other due to societal norms and expectations. But what happens when same-sex partners are involved? Do both individuals have equal footing? The answer is no, not always. Some studies suggest that gay men face higher rates of domestic violence than straight couples while lesbians experience lower levels of abuse. This could be due to several reasons; perhaps some women don't realize their own strength until it's too late. Or maybe some men see gay relationships as an opportunity to exert control over another individual without reprisals from society at large. Whatever the case may be, these differences in power dynamics can lead to tension within couples down the line.
