UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF PEER OBSERVATIONS ON AUTHENTIC VS. PERFORMATIVE SEXUAL BEHAVIORS

2 min read Queer

Peer observation is a method used to study human behavior by observing groups in their natural environments. Peer observation can be divided into two types: participant observation and nonparticipant observation. Participant observation involves actively participating in an activity, while nonparticipant observation means observing from a distance. Observation can take place in different settings such as classrooms, workplaces, communities, or social situations. It can also involve various methods like video recordings, audio recordings, interviews, questionnaires, etc. In this article, I will discuss how peer observations affect performative versus authentic sexual behaviors.

Authentic sexual behavior refers to real and genuine sexual interactions between individuals, which are driven by mutual attraction, desire, and passion. These include kissing, hugging, touching, caressing, foreplay, and sex. On the other hand, performative sexual behavior includes staged performances that may be choreographed or rehearsed for entertainment purposes. These include stripteases, pornography, pole dancing, and prostitution. Performative sexual behavior often lacks emotional depth and intimacy. Therefore, it is essential to distinguish between these two types of behaviors because they have distinct effects on people's minds and relationships.

Peer observation can help identify authentic and performative sexual behaviors.

If a couple engages in public displays of affection (PDA) such as holding hands, hugging, and kissing, it indicates that they are comfortable with each other and have genuine feelings towards one another. If they avoid PDA and prefer private spaces, it suggests that their relationship is more intimate and personal. Peer observation can also reveal whether a person is performing sexual acts for attention or pleasure. Someone who performs sexual acts without any emotion may lack self-esteem and require validation from others. They may also feel uncomfortable or guilty about their actions, leading them to behave inappropriately.

Peer observation plays an essential role in understanding human sexuality. It allows us to study how people interact with each other and understand their motivations behind certain behaviors. By recognizing authentic versus performative sexual behaviors, we can prevent misunderstandings and encourage healthy interactions between individuals.

How do peer observations affect performative versus authentic sexual behaviors?

Peer observation is an essential part of human development that has been studied extensively by researchers in various fields. It plays a vital role in shaping one's behavior and can influence performance levels in different contexts. In terms of sexual behavior, peer observation can shape both performative and authentic sexual acts.
