The importance given to sexual union varies from religion to religion but it holds great significance for all. Many philosophers have presented their views on the existential meaning projected onto sexual union in religious philosophy.
Existential Meanings Projected Onto Sexual Union In Religious Philosophy
Religion plays a crucial role in shaping the belief system of individuals. For some, it acts as a guiding force while others consider themselves agnostic or nonreligious.
There are certain aspects of life that do not change irrespective of one's beliefs; these include love, lust, and sex. Love is not limited to romantic relationships but also extends towards friends, family members, and even pets. Similarly, lust is not restricted to heterosexual couples but also includes homo, bisexual, and transgender individuals. Sexual union among individuals is natural and normal, and it is seen as a means of expressing emotions of love, lust, and affection towards each other. The religious philosophies project several meanings regarding sexual union which may differ based on culture and geography.
Biblical Perspective
The Bible states that sex should only occur within marriage between a man and woman who have committed themselves to each other for life. Marriage is considered a holy bond between two individuals who promise to stay together till death. The Bible mentions how Adam was alone without any companionship before God created Eve for him. This shows that human beings were created to live with someone else by their side so that they can feel complete. God created humans in His own image, and when a man and woman come together in marriage, they become one flesh.
Hinduism
Hinduism is an ancient religion that believes in reincarnation. It teaches that sexual union is a sacred act between a couple that has taken seven vows of marriage. According to the Hindu philosophy, Kama sutra, sexual intercourse should involve all five senses (touch, taste, smell, sight, sound) and must be pleasurable for both partners. This ensures that there is no friction or discomfort during intimacy. A married couple is allowed to engage in sexual union only after marriage; otherwise, it is considered a sinful act. Hindus also believe that men and women are born equal but different from each other. They have separate roles to play in society, and a woman's role is to nurture her children and take care of the household while a man earns money to support his family. Thus, sexual intercourse between them strengthens their bond.
Islam
Islamic philosophers view sex as something natural and essential for procreation. Men and women are supposed to get married according to their religious duties and responsibilities. Sexual union between husband and wife is necessary to ensure the continuity of life and is seen as a means of expressing love towards each other.
It should not be indulged in without reason or purpose. The Quran states that a man may marry four times, provided he treats his wives equally and justly. Marriage is considered a contract between two individuals who promise to stay together till death and fulfill their marital obligations.
Buddhism
Buddhists do not consider sexual union as evil or dirty, but they encourage practitioners to avoid lustful feelings and practice celibacy if possible. They believe that human beings should control their desires and focus on spiritual development instead of materialistic pleasures. Buddha taught his followers to lead a life of detachment and nonattachment, which includes abstaining from sensual pleasure such as eating, drinking, and having sex. Lust leads to desire, which can cause suffering. According to this philosophy, marriage is not a necessity; rather, individuals should live alone and seek enlightenment through meditation.
Judaism
Jewish philosophy holds that sexual union is an act of creation where a man and woman come together and create new life. It is seen as a sacred bond between a couple, and adultery is considered a sin against God. Sexual intercourse should only occur within marriage, and partners should feel no guilt about enjoying each other's company. Jewish men are allowed up to four wives at once if they can provide for them financially.
The women must consent to this arrangement willingly. This view is similar to Islamic beliefs in which polygamy is permissible under certain conditions.
