Taboo's content is considered too graphic for mainstream audiences
Taboo magazine's content has been described as being more explicit than most of its contemporaries, which have toned down their images due to censorship laws imposed by various countries and religious groups. The British Board of Film Classification rates some editions of Taboo's material as "adults only" while others are restricted to those aged 18 years old or above. In addition to its controversial themes, Taboo is also known for its extreme close-up images of women's genitals that have been compared to medical illustrations.
Taboo was sold exclusively through independent bookstores and mail order catalogues
Due to its highly sensitive subject matter, many outlets refused to carry Taboo magazines. This led to an increase in sales through specialty stores such as adult boutiques, private sex clubs, and online retailers where potential customers could find it without any trouble. The lack of exposure caused some readers to feel isolated when trying to purchase this publication. For example, in America, tabloid newspapers like the National Enquirer had previously published articles criticizing pornographic publications but failed to mention Taboo specifically because they did not want to lose advertisements from major corporations.
Taboo's editorial team defended its choice of content
Taboo editorial director Peter Vacher argues that the magazine reflects what happens behind closed doors in real life and does not seek to glorify violence against women. He further states: "We don't pretend to be anything other than what we are—a hardcore porno rag with a strong anti-establishment attitude." However, critics suggest that Taboo may be exploiting women by portraying them as objects rather than human beings with feelings and emotions, which leads to negative stereotypes about sexuality being reinforced within society. In response, the magazine has stated that all models featured are over 18 years old, willing participants who signed consent forms before appearing on set.
