UNCOVERING BISEXUALITY: EXPLORING AUTHENTICITY AND INTIMACY IN ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS

3 min read Bisexual

There has been increased attention paid to understanding the experiences of bisexual individuals who are currently in heterosexual relationships. While much research has focused on how bisexuals feel about themselves and their sexual identity, less is known about how they negotiate closeness and intimacy within these relationships. This study explores how bisexual individuals may experience authenticity when in a relationship with someone of the opposite or same sex.

Authenticity refers to the degree to which an individual feels comfortable expressing their true self and being accepted for who they are without fear of rejection or judgment. Research suggests that bisexual people often face unique challenges regarding authenticity due to societal biases and stereotypes surrounding bisexuality. They may struggle to navigate between their own attractions and desires while also meeting the expectations of their partner.

Some bisexual individuals may feel pressure to conform to heteronormative gender roles or to hide their sexual orientation from others. In heterosexual relationships, bisexuals may feel pressured to present as exclusively straight or gay, leading them to suppress their true feelings and identities. This can lead to feelings of inauthenticity and disconnection from oneself and one's partner.

The current study explored the experiences of seven bisexual women and four bisexual men who were either currently dating someone of the same sex or opposite sex. Participants completed semi-structured interviews that asked them to describe their experiences of authenticity within their romantic relationship. The findings suggest that there was a difference in the level of authenticity experienced by those who were dating same-sex versus opposite-sex partners. Bisexual individuals in same-sex relationships reported feeling more comfortable expressing themselves fully and openly than those in opposite-sex relationships. They felt less pressure to conform to societal expectations and were able to be more open about their sexual identity with their partner. Conversely, those in opposite-sex relationships often described experiencing greater stress around coming out and negotiating their sexual identity within the context of the relationship.

One participant, Jenny (who identified as female and bisexual), explained: "I feel like I have to put on this facade when I'm with my boyfriend. I don't want him to think I'm not interested in him just because I'm attracted to women too. It makes me feel fake and I don't know how to be myself." Another participant, David (male and bisexual), shared: "It's hard being closeted at work and then having to come home to my girlfriend and act straight. Sometimes I just want to let loose and be myself but I can't do it without her knowing."

The findings indicate that bisexual individuals may experience unique challenges regarding authenticity based on the gender of their current partner.

These findings highlight the importance of understanding the diverse experiences of bisexual individuals within their intimate relationships. Further research is needed to explore the factors that contribute to these differences, such as societal attitudes towards bisexuality and the dynamics of power and control within romantic partnerships. By recognizing and acknowledging these experiences, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all members of the LGBTQ+ community.

How do bisexual individuals experience authenticity differently depending on the gender of their current partner?

The level of identity disclosure among bisexuals depends on several factors such as the context, perceived social norms, and personal comfortability. It can be influenced by interpersonal dynamics (e. g. , relationship type) and cultural values associated with sexual orientation (e. g. , acceptance). In terms of current partner's gender, research suggests that bisexual individuals may feel more comfortable expressing themselves authentically when they are dating someone of the same gender (i.
