THE TRUE NATURE OF LUST: REEXAMINING RELIGIONS APPROACH TO RELATIONSHIPS AND INTIMACY

3 min read Theology

Religious dogma has traditionally viewed human desire and pleasure in sexual matters as morally corrupt and sinful, often conflating it with the negative emotions of shame and guilt. This attitude toward sexuality and gender roles can lead to a pervasive sense of self-loathing, causing individuals to feel ashamed and guilty for their natural biological urges. In many cases, people are taught that experiencing arousal and lust is wrong and must be suppressed or denied altogether.

This approach ultimately leads to denial of one's true nature and may result in greater harm than good. Sexual pleasure, when properly understood, can be a positive force for connecting individuals and building healthy relationships. Therefore, religious condemnation of lust needs to be redefined to acknowledge its natural place within the human experience rather than viewing it as a moral failure.

The traditional Christian stance on sex is rooted in the belief that all physical desire should be directed towards procreation and that anything outside of marriage is forbidden. This creates a dichotomy between sinful "lust" and virtuous "love," which is problematic because love is defined as an emotion while lust is a biological response. By equating lust with something evil, Christians fail to recognize that we have been created with innate desires and impulses. As a result, many people struggle with feelings of shame, guilt, and embarrassment, leading them to hide their true selves from others and themselves.

This judgmental perspective has led to widespread confusion over what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Pornography is often viewed as a major sin even though it does not involve any other person. This attitude fails to recognize that many people find sexual stimulation through visual media and that pornography can help them explore and understand their own bodies and desires. It also ignores the fact that some couples engage in consensual erotic activities without feeling guilty or ashamed.

The religious condemnation of lust causes harm by encouraging people to deny their true nature and suppress their emotions. This approach may lead individuals to repress their urges and internalize negative messages about their body and desires. Conversely, when people are able to express their sexuality openly and honestly within safe boundaries, they can experience greater intimacy and connection with others. Sexual pleasure is a natural part of being human, and it should be embraced rather than shunned.

Redefining religious attitudes towards lust is essential for promoting healthier relationships, reducing feelings of shame, and improving mental well-being. By recognizing that sexual desire is a normal and healthy aspect of life, we can begin to create a more positive and accepting society where individuals feel free to explore their identities and connect with others on a deeper level. It's time for us to move beyond outdated dogma and embrace our God-given natures.
