THE TENSION BETWEEN SOCIAL CONFORMITY AND EXISTENTIAL AUTHENTICITY IN BISEXUALITY

2 min read Bisexual

Bisexuality is a term used to describe individuals who are attracted to both men and women. It is often seen as a form of sexual orientation that falls outside of the binary of heterosexuality and homosexuality, but it also raises important questions about societal norms and expectations. In this essay, I will explore how bisexuality can be understood as an example of the philosophical tension between social conformity and existential authenticity.

The concept of social conformity refers to the idea that people should act according to certain socially accepted standards and norms. This includes adhering to traditional gender roles, dressing a certain way, and conforming to expectations regarding romantic relationships.

Society may expect individuals to date and marry members of their own sex, and those who deviate from these expectations may face stigma and discrimination. Bisexuality challenges this expectation because it suggests that individuals have the ability to experience attraction to multiple genders, regardless of societal norms or expectations.

Existential authenticity refers to the idea that individuals have the right to live authentically and pursue what they find meaningful in life. This means being true to one's values, beliefs, and desires, even if they differ from societal norms. For bisexuals, this could mean acknowledging and embracing their feelings of attraction towards different genders without fear of judgment or repression. By doing so, they challenge the assumption that sexual orientation must fit into rigid categories and defy the pressures of social conformity.

Exploring existential authenticity can also lead to its own set of challenges.

Some bisexuals may feel conflicted about their attractions, feeling pressure to conform to societal expectations or doubting their own identities. Others may struggle with acceptance within their communities or with finding partners who share their non-binary sexual identity. In addition, bisexuality can be used as a label by individuals who do not necessarily identify with it, which can undermine its meaning and legitimacy.

Despite these challenges, bisexuality offers an opportunity for individuals to explore and embrace all aspects of themselves, including their sexual identity. It allows them to live authentically and pursue relationships based on their own needs and desires, rather than conforming to societal expectations. In doing so, they illuminate the tension between social conformity and existential authenticity, providing insight into how we navigate our personal and social lives.

How does bisexuality illuminate the philosophical tension between social conformity and existential authenticity?

Bisexuality is a sexual orientation characterized by romantic attraction, sexual attraction, or sexual behavior toward both males and females. It can be defined as "not limited in sexual choice with regard to biological sex, gender, or gender identity" (Merriam Webster Dictionary). Bisexual individuals may experience a sense of freedom from societal expectations surrounding sexual orientation while also facing discrimination based on their identity.
