THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SEXUAL JEALOUSY IN MEN | WHY IT OCCURS AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR RELATIONSHIPS enIT FR DE PL PT RU AR ES

Sexual jealousy is a strong emotional reaction to perceived threats against one's romantic relationship, including an exclusive sexual bond between partners. In heterosexual couples, it is more common for men than women to display signs of jealousy because they fear that their female partner may be unfaithful due to evolutionary reasons. Men are naturally polygamous; therefore, they need to ensure paternity and protect themselves from potential rivals who could take away their mates.

This does not mean all male individuals express jealousy behaviorally. Some males do so excessively while others hardly react at all.

There are several ways in which men may exhibit feelings of sexual jealousy, such as through physical aggression, verbal abuse, possessiveness, controlling behaviors, accusations, suspicion, monitoring, surveillance, and isolation. Physical aggression includes hitting, pushing, throwing objects, or even hurting the other person's pets. Verbal abuse refers to insults, yelling, name-calling, threatening, blaming, and humiliating remarks. Possessiveness involves controlling the partner by limiting freedom of movement, accessibility, privacy, and social interactions with others. Accusations refer to making false allegations, accusing of betrayal, or creating doubts about fidelity. Suspicion implies questioning the partner's actions, whereabouts, activities, or conversations, demanding explanations, checking phones, emails, social media accounts, and personal belongings. Monitoring entails following the partner closely, tracking them via technology or third parties, spying on their phone calls or text messages, checking their finances, etc. Isolation means separating the couple physically or emotionally, preventing contact with friends, family members, colleagues, and avoiding going out together.

Male jealousy is a complex phenomenon that can manifest itself in various ways. Understanding these patterns helps couples recognize and address potential issues before they escalate into more severe problems.

How do men express sexual jealousy behaviorally?

Sexual jealousy can be expressed through different behaviors depending on individual factors such as culture, age, personality, and situation. Generally speaking, men may exhibit aggressive or passive forms of expression when feeling jealous towards their partners' sexual desires and interests. Aggression is usually demonstrated by angry outbursts, threats, physical assaults, or possessiveness while passivity involves withdrawal, silent treatment, avoidance, or manipulation.
