The prophet Muhammad is widely regarded as a major religious figure in Islamic history. He was said to have received revelations from God through the angel Gabriel and communicated them to his followers in the form of divine messages known as the Quran. This idea of revelation is central to the faith, and it shapes Muslim understandings of authority, power, and truth. According to traditional interpretations, God's speech is perfect and unchanging, so the language of the Quran should be understood as exactly what God intended it to be.
This strict adherence to orthodoxy has led to a situation where many Muslims are unable to question or critique traditional teachings about sex and relationships without being accused of blasphemy or apostasy.

Still, others have pointed out that the Quran does not explicitly condemn premarital sex or extramarital affairs, suggesting that Islam may allow for more flexible attitudes towards sexuality than is commonly believed.
Reclaiming the Language of the Prophets
By reclaiming the language of the prophets, we can reframe our understanding of intimacy, sexuality, and relationships within an Islamic context. Instead of accepting the patriarchal and heteronormative interpretations that have dominated religious discourse for centuries, we can use the Quran to speak on behalf of those who have been silenced by religion. We can create new narratives that celebrate diversity, embrace difference, and affirm the right of all people to express their own desires and needs in healthy ways. This would require a radical shift in perspective, but it could also lead to a more inclusive and compassionate Muslim community.
