THE POWER OF SELFAWARENESS: HOW TO RECOGNIZE AND RESPOND TO CONSTRUCTIVE RELATIONSHIP CRITICISM.

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is the ability to perceive oneself accurately from an objective point of view. It includes understanding one's own emotions, thoughts, behaviors, values, strengths, weaknesses, motivations, desires, beliefs, goals, needs, and thoughts about others. It requires observing oneself and others nonjudgmentally, without attributing blame or praise to self or others.

Constructive Responses

A constructive response is a solution-oriented reaction that seeks to resolve conflicts peacefully and productively. It involves active listening, expressing feelings openly and honestly, acknowledging mistakes, taking responsibility for one's actions, apologizing, seeking clarification, empathy, compromising, negotiating, and finding common ground. It helps build trust, respect, and mutual understanding.

Criticism

Criticism refers to negative feedback given to improve or change something. It can be constructive when it provides specific suggestions for improvement or destructive when it demeans, attacks, belittles, ridicules, shames, blames, or condemns. Criticism should be given in a respectful, non-confrontational way, avoiding sarcasm, passive aggression, manipulation, or control.

Influence

Self-awareness influences responses to relational criticism by enabling individuals to understand their own perceptions, reactions, and biases. It enables them to identify their needs, motivations, triggers, vulnerabilities, blind spots, defense mechanisms, and patterns of behavior. They can then recognize when they are overreacting, defensive, resistant, or need more information before responding. Self-aware people are less likely to take criticism personally, become defensive, react impulsively, or escalate conflict.

If a partner criticizes one's cooking skills, a self-aware person may reflect on the accuracy of the criticism and consider how their past experiences with food may have influenced their current abilities. They may seek clarification about what aspects of their cooking were lacking and why. They may also acknowledge that their partner has valuable insights into what tastes good and offer to learn from their expertise. This allows them to work collaboratively towards an improved outcome without feeling attacked or threatened.

How does self-awareness influence constructive responses to relational criticism?

Self-awareness influences constructive responses to relational criticism by enabling an individual to recognize their own biases and limitations while also being open to feedback from others. By cultivating self-awareness, individuals can gain insight into areas of improvement and better understand how they come across to others, which helps them respond appropriately when faced with critical comments.
