In this essay, I will explore how queerness redefines autonomy, agency, and personal freedom through three key ways: by expanding what counts as acceptable forms of expression, by questioning social hierarchies and power dynamics, and by challenging heteronormative assumptions about identity and intimacy.
Expanding Acceptable Forms of Expression
One way that queerness expands the definition of autonomy is by broadening the scope of what is considered acceptable modes of expression. Historically, those who do not conform to socially accepted gender norms have been marginalized and oppressed, making it difficult for them to express their true selves freely.
