THE PERVASIVE EFFECTS OF SEXUALIZATION: HOW BODY IMAGES AFFECT PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS

Sexualization is a societal construct that has been used to objectify individuals since time immemorial. This process involves the depiction of an individual's body in a manner that suggests sexual interest or desire. It can be viewed through various lenses, including fashion choices, advertising campaigns, entertainment outlets, media coverage, and social interactions. Sexualization of women has received greater attention than men due to its widespread prevalence.

It is still important to note that both genders are subjected to such treatment. The perception of competence, authority, and credibility have become entwined with the concept of sexualization in recent years. In this article, I will explain how sexualized perception affects the perception of these attributes.

Sexualized perception can negatively impact one's professional success. Individuals who possess qualities that make them suitable for their positions, but whose appearance emphasizes their sexiness rather than their expertise, tend to experience difficulties when vying for promotions and other opportunities. Such people are often seen as less competent compared to those who do not portray themselves as sexually attractive.

A female manager may struggle to obtain a promotion because her superiors think she is more suited for the position of receptionist instead. This tendency stems from the common belief that women should be sex objects, while men are more apt at handling leadership roles. Similarly, a male employee may find it hard to land a promotion if his physical features are more appealing than his skills. His colleagues might consider him unsuitable for executive-level positions since they believe he would misuse his power for personal gratification. Therefore, sexualized perception can hinder an individual's career advancement by limiting their chances of being perceived as a capable leader or worker.

Sexualization may also undermine an individual's credibility. When someone appears sexy, they are judged as lacking depth and substance. People are likely to dismiss such individuals' opinions as shallow and irrelevant since they feel that sexualized individuals prioritize pleasure over knowledge. A man, for instance, may be disregarded during a business meeting simply because he wears tight clothing or sports gelled hair. The same applies to women; they will only be considered knowledgeable and reliable in the workplace if they look conservative and dress appropriately. Such treatment creates barriers to entry into many industries, especially those that require expertise. Thus, sexualized perception lowers one's credibility and makes them seem less informed about relevant topics.

Authority is another attribute affected by sexualization. Individuals who appear sexually attractive tend to have difficulty being taken seriously due to their lack of seriousness and professionalism. They are perceived as careless and easygoing, which does not bode well with people seeking authority figures.

A female politician who dresses provocatively will struggle to garner support from her constituents since she seems irresponsible. Similarly, a male CEO who flaunts his wealth will find it hard to command respect since he will be viewed as arrogant and untrustworthy. Sexualization can thus lead to reduced authority, making it difficult for individuals to influence others positively.

Sexualized perception affects how other people view competence, authority, and credibility. Those seen as sexy often face discrimination at the workplace since they are deemed less capable than their peers. This unfair judgment negates their qualifications and skills, reducing them to mere objects of desire rather than experts in their fields. It also limits opportunities for career advancement, leading to frustration and disappointment. People should learn to appreciate professionals based on their capabilities instead of their appearance.

How does sexualized perception affect the perception of competence, authority, and credibility?

The research on sexualization has explored the implications of its effects on perceptions of competence, authority, and credibility of individuals who are not only women but also men (Walters et al. , 2018).
