THE IMPACT OF VIRTUAL SEXUAL ENGAGEMENT ON RELATIONSHIP SATISFACTION: EXPLORING POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE EFFECTS enIT FR DE PL PT RU JA ES

Virtual sexual engagement refers to digital interactions that involve the sharing of explicit material such as text, pictures, videos, or audio recordings. It can range from sexting to cybersex, including roleplaying, chat rooms, and pornography. While it has been claimed to promote healthy and safe exploration of sexuality, its effect on human attachment and relationship satisfaction is still debated. This study will explore how virtual sexual activities impact these aspects, considering both positive and negative implications.

Sexual attraction and long-term connection are intertwined processes involving physical, emotional, and cognitive components. Attachment security involves feeling safe and secure when seeking closeness and support, while relational satisfaction depends on meeting expectations and needs. Emotional regulation involves managing feelings, thoughts, and behaviors to cope with distress. Virtual sexual engagement may enhance intimacy and foster bonding through communication and trust but also create anxiety and jealousy.

In this study, we reviewed literature on virtual sexual engagement, attachment theory, and emotion regulation models. We found mixed results, suggesting that virtual sexual engagement could be beneficial for some individuals and harmful for others.

Online flirting may boost self-esteem and reduce loneliness, while cybersex might increase addiction and decreased arousal in real life.

Most participants reported feeling more confident, supported, and accepted after a session of cybersex.

The findings show a complex interplay between technology, intimacy, and wellbeing. Virtual sexual experiences can provide novel opportunities for connection, but they can also lead to problems such as infidelity, body dysmorphia, or performance anxiety. Therefore, it is essential to understand one's own motives and limitations before entering the digital world. By using virtual sexuality responsibly, people can enjoy its benefits while minimizing potential risks.

To what degree does virtual sexual engagement influence attachment security, relational satisfaction, and emotional regulation?

The relationship between virtual sexual engagement and attachment security, relational satisfaction, and emotional regulation is currently an area of active research and debate. There are mixed findings from previous studies on how these variables may be affected by virtual sexual engagement. Some research suggests that individuals who engage in virtual sexual activities such as online pornography consumption may experience decreased levels of attachment security, which can negatively impact their romantic relationships.
