THE IMPACT OF HIERARCHY ON SEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS IN THE MILITARY: WHY IT MATTERS

3 min read Trans

The military's hierarchical structure is one of the most important elements that can be found in an organization. It determines how power is distributed and who has control over decision making. This type of system also influences interpersonal communication within the organization. In this article, I will explain what it means for the hierarchy to have an impact on communication between individuals in the military and why it might create some issues when it comes to personal relationships outside of work.

What Is Hierarchy?

Hierarchy refers to the order or ranking of members within an organization based on their position and authority level. There are different types of hierarchies, such as vertical and horizontal. The former means that employees report directly to managers while the latter implies that they report through multiple levels before reaching their supervisors. Military organizations tend to adopt a vertical structure where there is clear distinction among ranks from top to bottom. This means that subordinates must obey orders without questioning them regardless of their opinions or suggestions regarding specific tasks.

How Does the Hierarchy Affect Interpersonal Communication?

The hierarchical structure affects interpersonal communication because it creates barriers between those with higher positions and lower ones.

If a soldier disagrees with his commander during a task, he might not feel comfortable expressing his opinion openly because he knows that it could lead him into trouble or even result in punishment. That kind of environment makes people think twice before sharing their thoughts and feelings since they fear reprisals from their superiors which may damage their careers and future prospects.

Soldiers may find themselves in uncomfortable situations where they have to pretend everything is fine just so they can keep their jobs despite feeling dissatisfied about certain aspects related to their job performance or duties assigned by their superior officers.

Can the Hierarchy Be Overcome?

Even though hierarchy plays an important role in military operations, it doesn't mean that it cannot be overcome when it comes down to personal relationships outside work hours. It all depends on how individuals manage these interactions according to their particular context - whether they are friends or acquaintances outside the army base/campground - and how much respect they show towards each other's statuses (rank).

Two soldiers who know each other well enough can establish a healthy relationship based on mutual understanding rather than strict rules imposed by their commanders; however, this requires time spent together away from work activities as well as openness toward one another without judging each other too harshly due to differences in rank level within the organization's chain of command.

How does the military's hierarchical structure affect the authenticity of interpersonal communication?

In the military, where a strict hierarchy is prevalent, communication between individuals can become highly formalized and impersonal, even when they are familiar with one another. This can lead to feelings of alienation and disconnection within the ranks. The hierarchical structure also tends to limit opportunities for open and honest dialogue, which can undermine trust and create distrust among team members.
