THE IMPACT OF GLOBAL MIGRATION PATTERNS ON LGBTQ+ PERCEPTIONS: A STUDY OF INTERGENERATIONAL TIES enFR DE PL TR PT RU AR JA CN ES

The LGBT community has been growing worldwide since the 20th century, and its members have developed strong ties across national borders. With the advent of digital technologies and social media, these connections are becoming stronger and more extensive than ever before. People from all around the globe can now share their experiences, interact virtually, build new friendships, learn about different cultures, and create new perspectives on homosexuality.

These global networks also bring challenges, including cultural differences that may affect how people perceive same-sex attraction. This paper will explore how global migration patterns, transnational networks, and digital communities shape perceptions of homosexuality and what opportunities exist for cross-cultural solidarity and exchange. The research presented here is based on academic sources that provide insights into how globalization and technology have transformed the way individuals view sexual identities in various parts of the world. In addition to discussing the challenges associated with living abroad or being part of an online community, this study shows how these communities have empowered queer people everywhere, created spaces where they can express themselves freely, and fostered awareness and empathy among diverse groups.

Transnationalism

Transnationalism

Transnationalism refers to the interaction between people who live in one country but maintain links with another through family, religion, business, or other forms of connection. These individuals often move back and forth between two or more countries, creating a network of relationships that span geographic boundaries (Ong & Collier, 2019). According to Ong & Collier (2019), transnationalism is defined as "a process of increasingly fluid and complex social relations across national borders" (p. 43). Transnational migrants usually maintain strong ties with their home countries and continue to participate in local politics and culture while residing overseas.

Many Indian immigrants to the United States are Hindu, and some remain involved in religious ceremonies in India despite having lived there for decades (Ho & Ramakrishnan, 2016). Many African Americans have ancestors from Africa and still identify strongly with their cultural heritage (Rouse, 2017). This phenomenon has also affected the LGBT community, which now includes members from all over the world.

Transnational Networks

Globalization has enabled the creation of networks spanning several countries. One example is the African Diaspora, a community of people of African descent scattered around the globe. The word diaspora means dispersion, and it describes how these groups maintain close ties with each other even when living far apart (Carruthers, 2018). In this context, the term refers to the dispersal of Africans throughout the world due to colonialism and slavery. As a result, many Africans live outside the continent but keep links with their families and communities back home. While the exact number of black people living abroad remains unknown, estimates suggest that there may be more than one billion people of African origin living outside the continent (Mohamed et al., 2020). Some scholars argue that the African Diaspora encompasses everyone who identifies as Black and lives outside Africa, regardless of citizenship or ethnicity (Gilroy, 2004). Others consider it a more limited group defined by direct ancestry (Brittain-Catlin, 2019). Regardless, the African Diaspora has had a profound impact on societies across the globe.

Transnational networks are particularly important for understanding how global migration patterns shape perceptions of homosexuality because they connect individuals with different cultural backgrounds.

An individual from Nigeria living in the United States might have relatives in Nigeria who still hold conservative views about homosexuality (Fadugba & Ayanlade, 2016). Similarly, a person from Mexico living in Canada could interact regularly with family members who oppose same-sex marriage (Perez, 2017). These connections create a complex dynamic where individuals navigate between conflicting ideas about sexual identity, depending on who they encounter and when. In addition to transnational migrants, many LGBTQ+ people now participate in online communities worldwide, creating a new type of network that crosses borders virtually.

Digital Communities

Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram allow users to connect with others around the world instantly. While these networks can be used for personal reasons, they also offer opportunities for professional development and activism.

Some social justice movements have gained traction through online campaigns such as BlackLivesMatter and MeToo. The LGBT community has also benefited from this trend, using digital spaces to raise awareness, organize events, and build support networks (Ramirez, 2019; Shenker, 2021). According to Ramirez (2019), queer people have created "a vibrant online culture" (p. 1) where they can share their experiences, express themselves freely, and seek solidarity with others who identify similarly.

These interactions are not always positive.

Challenges Associated with Global Migration Patterns and Transnational Networks

Global migration patterns and transnational networks bring challenges associated with cultural differences that may affect how individuals perceive homosexuality. People living abroad or interacting with those from different countries must learn to adapt to unfamiliar norms and values. Some cultures view same-sex attraction negatively, while others accept it openly. In addition, individuals born into conservative families often struggle to come out due to fear of rejection or reprisal. This section will explore some of the challenges

How do global migration patterns, transnational networks, and digital communities shape perceptions of homosexuality, and what opportunities exist for cross-cultural solidarity and exchange?

The increasing globalization and connectivity through technology have allowed individuals across different cultures to come together and form transnational networks. These networks have played a crucial role in shaping perceptions of homosexuality around the world. The exposure to other cultural norms and values has enabled individuals from different countries to gain new perspectives on homosexuality. This exposure has led to an increase in tolerance towards homosexuality and acceptance of diversity.
