THE IMPACT OF CHRONIC MARGINALIZATION ON LGBTQ+ INDIVIDUALS SEXUALITY AND INTIMACY

2 min read Lesbian

The concept of marginalization refers to the process whereby an individual or group is pushed to the periphery of society and its benefits, leading them to experience poverty, deprivation, discrimination, lack of opportunities, limited access to services, and social isolation. Marginalized groups often face barriers that prevent them from integrating into mainstream society due to their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, political beliefs, sexual orientation, disability, or socioeconomic status.

Chronic marginalization can have long-term psychological effects on LGBTQ+ individuals, such as increased feelings of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, loneliness, and shame. Research has shown that these individuals are more likely to report higher rates of mental health problems than heterosexual people and are less likely to seek help for them. They may feel isolated from family members who do not understand or accept their sexual orientation or gender identity, which increases feelings of rejection and vulnerability.

They may be exposed to prejudice and discrimination in educational, employment, housing, medical, legal, and other areas of life, exacerbating the sense of alienation.

Long-term social exclusion can also affect LGBTQ+ individuals' relationships with others, making it difficult for them to form meaningful connections. Due to stigma and fear, many may choose to hide their true selves, creating a gap between their public and private lives. This secrecy can lead to difficulty building trusting bonds, as well as a lack of authentic communication and intimacy. It may also result in lower self-disclosure, reduced emotional openness, and decreased investment in relationships. The consequences of chronic marginalization and social exclusion can persist over time, even if an individual experiences integration into mainstream society.

Chronic marginalization and social exclusion can significantly impact LGBTQ+ individuals' social and psychological well-being, resulting in lasting trauma that requires specialized support and intervention.

By working towards greater societal inclusion and acceptance, we can promote positive outcomes for this community and foster resilience and empowerment among its members.
