Bisexuality is a unique form of human sexual orientation characterized by an individual's potential for emotional, romantic, or sexual attraction to individuals who identify as men, women, nonbinary, transgender, intersex, or genderqueer. This means that bisexuals experience sexual desire towards persons of more than one sex or gender. Bisexual people may also experience attractions towards all sexes or genders simultaneously.
It can be hard to describe this identity because most social constructs are rigidly binary in nature. They are based on opposites such as masculine versus feminine, self versus other, or attraction versus repulsion.
The traditional model of heterosexuality assumes that men and women are fundamentally different from each other while homosexuality suggests that they have similarities. The concept of bisexuality challenges these binaries by blurring their boundaries.
In terms of self versus other, the binary concept assumes that a person should either belong to the same sex or opposite sex. That is, you must choose between being masculine or feminine. In contrast, bisexuality implies that someone can find both manliness and womanliness appealing without having to be identified with either category. It challenges the idea that there are only two categories of masculinity and femininity.
It allows people to explore their desires outside of societal expectations and stereotypes about gender roles. As a result, bi individuals enjoy more freedom in expressing themselves and connecting with others regardless of their sex or gender.
In terms of attraction versus repulsion, bisexuality defies the conventional notion of sexual orientation which assumes that sexual attraction has a clear cut-off point. While some may assume that bisexuals are primarily attracted to both men and women at once, bisexuals may also feel an equal level of attraction for persons belonging to various genders. This means that bisexuals experience a range of sexual attractions rather than exclusively preferring one type of sex. Bisexuality thus subverts the dichotomy between attraction and repulsion by allowing sexuality to fluctuate depending on the situation.
