THE CONNECTION BETWEEN RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY SURVIVAL AND SEXUAL RESTRAINT IN APOCALYPTIC NARRATIVES | EXPLORING THE LINK

3 min read Theology

The link between religious community survival and moral order is an important aspect of how human beings think about life, death, and their place in the universe. Apocalyptic narratives have explored this connection for centuries through stories that center around the end of time and the judgment of individuals based on their actions and beliefs. In these tales, the survivors are often those who demonstrate sexual restraint and adherence to strict moral codes. This association between morality and survival is rooted in a belief that religious communities need to maintain control over the behavior of its members to ensure their safety from external threats, whether they come from divine punishment or natural disasters.

In many apocalyptic narratives, sexual restraint is seen as a key component of moral order because it prevents the spread of disease and other risks associated with promiscuity.

In the biblical book of Leviticus, God commands his people to avoid sex outside marriage because it can lead to illnesses like leprosy and infertility. Similarly, in Islamic teachings, extramarital sex is forbidden because it can cause social instability by leading to illegitimate children and broken families. By restricting sexual activity to married couples within a religious community, leaders can ensure that all members follow certain rules and maintain strong bonds that will help them weather any crisis.

Some scholars argue that these restrictions go beyond practical concerns about health and stability. They suggest that sexual restraint also serves to reinforce power dynamics within the community by controlling the distribution of resources and privileges. In medieval Europe, monastic orders used celibacy to create an elite class of men who were devoted to spiritual pursuits but did not have families to support. This allowed them to focus on studying scripture and building up the church's authority without being distracted by family obligations. In modern times, some fundamentalist Christian groups have promoted strict gender roles that limit women's access to education and careers while elevating men's status as providers and protectors.

Despite these advantages, there are also drawbacks to using erotic restraint as a tool for survival. When sexual desire is suppressed or repressed, it often finds expression through violence and aggression toward others who do not share the same beliefs. In many apocalyptic stories, this leads to conflict between the righteous and wicked, with the former often resorting to brutal methods to maintain their purity and purge the latter from society.

In "The Handmaid's Tale," the totalitarian regime of Gilead uses forced marriages and sterilization to control reproduction and suppress dissent among women.

The connection between morality and survival has been central to religious communities throughout history, and apocalyptic narratives have explored how this relationship can shape our understanding of sex, relationships, and power dynamics. While some argue that restrictions on sexual behavior are necessary for stability and security, others point out that they can also lead to oppression and violence.

Only time will tell whether restrictive moral codes are truly beneficial or harmful to human societies.
