The current study explores how Mexican Mormons navigate the conflict between their religious beliefs regarding sexual conduct and their private erotic desires within marriage. Specifically, it seeks to understand whether and how this tension influences marital intimacy, communication, and mental wellbeing. To achieve these objectives, an anonymous survey was distributed among members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) living in Mexico City.
In total, 126 surveys were collected and analyzed for the purpose of this study. The sample included both male and female participants who identified as being married. Participants answered questions about their views on sexuality, communication within their marriages, and personal experiences with sexual health. These responses were used to explore the ways in which Mormon couples attempt to reconcile their religious obligations with their erotic desires.
Results revealed that while most respondents reported feeling some level of guilt or shame associated with engaging in sexual activity outside of procreation, they also expressed a desire for more intimate connections with their partners. This suggests that many Mormons feel conflicted about sex and struggle to find a balance between spiritual obligations and individual needs.
The data showed that those who felt the most guilt or shame surrounding their sexual behavior were less likely to discuss it with their spouses. This indicates that the pressure to conform to religious teachings can create barriers to honest and open communication in relationships.
The results suggest that Mexican Mormons face challenges when trying to reconcile their erotic desires with their faith's expectations around sex.
Based on these findings, several implications are drawn regarding the potential impact of religious beliefs on marital intimacy and wellbeing. Firstly, it is suggested that greater education about sexual health and communication may be necessary to help couples navigate these issues. Secondly, it is argued that mental health professionals should take into account the role of religion in shaping sexual attitudes and behaviors when working with LDS clients.
It is recommended that future research examine how this tension affects other aspects of marriage, such as parenting and financial decision-making.
