THE COMPLEX ROLE OF BEAUTY IN QUEER EXPRESSION: CAN IT BE A TOOL FOR LIBERATION OR OPPRESSION? enIT FR DE PL TR PT RU AR JA CN ES

2 min read Queer

The question of whether beauty can be used to tame the political power of queer expression is an important one that has been debated for decades. On the one hand, some argue that traditional gender roles and norms are reinforced through beauty ideals, while others suggest that beauty can be used to challenge these societal expectations. In this essay, I will explore both sides of this argument, examining how beauty can be a tool for either liberation or oppression within the context of queer expression.

Beauty as a Tool for Liberation

One way that beauty can be used to challenge traditional gender roles and norms is by subverting them.

Drag performances often involve blurring gender boundaries and playing with traditional ideas about femininity and masculinity. By embracing stereotypically "feminine" traits such as makeup, high heels, and skirts, drag performers can reclaim and redefine what it means to be feminine. Similarly, nonbinary individuals who embrace traditionally "masculine" clothing and behaviors can disrupt social norms around gender expression. Through their self-expression, they challenge society's rigid definitions of gender and sexuality, creating new spaces for themselves in the process.

Beauty as a Tool for Oppression

There are also ways in which beauty can be used to uphold traditional gender roles and norms. Many advertising campaigns rely on traditional beauty standards, such as thinness and whiteness, to sell products. These images reinforce harmful stereotypes about body image and race, perpetuating a narrow idea of what is considered beautiful. This can have negative consequences for those who do not fit into these categories, leading to feelings of inadequacy and even eating disorders.

Heteronormative ideals of beauty often privilege cisgender individuals over transgender and nonbinary people, further marginalizing already underrepresented groups.

While beauty can certainly be used to challenge traditional gender roles and norms, it can also perpetuate them if not used carefully. It is up to each individual to decide how they want to use beauty in their own life and political activism, but it is important to recognize that the impact of these choices goes beyond the individual level. By critically examining our relationship with beauty, we can work towards creating a more equitable and inclusive world for all.

Does beauty risk taming the political power of queer expression?

It can be argued that queer expression has been used as a tool for liberation from oppressive forces throughout history, but with the rise of beauty pageants and similar cultural institutions, it is possible that there may now be a risk of queer expression becoming subdued by these powerful institutions. This could potentially have negative implications on LGBTQ+ individuals' ability to freely express themselves and challenge societal norms.
