From the colonial era up until today, there have been many different periods that have shaped how LGBTQ+ people are viewed and treated. In this essay, I will explore three main factors: culture, religion, and politics.
Culture is one of the biggest influences on the historical trajectory of LGBTQ+ rights in Latin America. For centuries, indigenous cultures saw homosexuality and gender fluidity as normal and accepted parts of society.
With the arrival of European colonizers came new ideas about morality and sexuality. The Catholic Church, for example, condemned any form of sexual activity outside of heterosexual marriage, which led to persecution and violence against LGBTQ+ individuals. This attitude remained strong throughout much of Latin American history and even influenced laws and policies. In some countries, such as Mexico, same-sex relationships were outlawed for decades until they were finally legalized in 2019.
Religion also played an important role in shaping attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people. Many religions in Latin America, particularly Catholicism, view homosexuality as a sin or immoral behavior. This belief has often translated into discrimination, marginalization, and violence against LGBTQ+ communities.
In Colombia, religious groups have protested against same-sex marriage for years, citing their faith as justification for their actions.
Politics has had both positive and negative impacts on LGBTQ+ rights in Latin America. On one hand, many governments have taken steps to protect LGBTQ+ rights through legislation, such as passing anti-discrimination laws or recognizing same-sex marriage. But on the other hand, political leaders have also used homophobia and transphobia to gain support from conservative voters. In Brazil, for example, former president Jair Bolsonaro openly supported violence against LGBTQ+ people during his campaign and once said that he would rather have a dead son than a gay son. These types of comments reveal how politics can be used to oppress LGBTQ+ people rather than protect them.
The historical trajectory of LGBTQ+ rights in Latin America is complex and multifaceted. Cultural influences, religious beliefs, and political pressures all play a role in shaping attitudes and policies towards LGBTQ+ individuals. While there have been some victories for LGBTQ+ rights, there is still much work to be done to ensure full equality for all members of society.
