SEXUALIZING YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE: HOW AND WHY WE LOVE TO GET AROUSED AT WORK AND BEYOND

Sexualization is the process of making something more appealing to one's sexual instincts, such as through visual presentation, physical touch, verbal communication, and so forth. It can be applied to nearly anything imaginable: clothing, food, objects, places, situations, and so on. Sexualization is not limited to obvious subjects like sex toys, pornography, and strip clubs; it can occur anywhere that people are present.

A restaurant might market itself as "sexy" by using suggestive images in its advertising campaigns. This creates an atmosphere where customers feel more inclined to buy food based on their sexual appetite than on objective factors like price, taste, and nutritional value. The same could happen with workplace rules, which would be less likely to be followed if they were perceived as having sexualized aspects.

To understand how this happens, consider a typical office setting. The boss may have strict policies regarding appropriate dress codes, employee behavior, punctuality, etc., but these policies are rarely enforced because they do not reflect the company culture. In fact, the rules seem outdated and repressive. What if the work environment had been deliberately designed to promote sexual arousal? Employees might take breaks for private intimate encounters or use company resources for personal pleasures. They might also engage in sexual banter or flirt with colleagues, disregarding standard business practices.

Adherence to formal rules would become optional because employees would see them as incompatible with workplace norms.

Imagine two scenarios: one where everyone is wearing jeans and t-shirts, and another where everybody looks like models from a fashion magazine. Which scenario seems more conducive to productivity? Which one feels safer? Most people would prefer the first option because it's easier to focus on tasks when there isn't much distraction. Sexualization can make employees uncomfortable and cause distractions that prevent them from working effectively. It can also undermine the legitimacy of rulemakers who try to uphold traditional values while their competitors adopt more progressive views on sex. As a result, companies may lose talent to rivals that promote a more permissive atmosphere. In short, sexualized perception can affect rule adherence negatively by creating an atmosphere where workers feel free to break the rules because they don't see them as relevant anymore.

But how does this happen exactly? Firstly, sexualization requires an element of surprise or novelty. If workers are used to seeing half-naked women on the TV every day at home, why should office decorations impress them so much? Secondly, sexualization needs to be persistent; otherwise, it will not have lasting effects on behavior. Thirdly, it must reflect a majority opinion among employees (or management) for its impact to be felt widely. Lastly, it has to go beyond mere appearance: if workers are merely told what to wear instead of shown what to wear, then the influence of visual stimuli becomes minimal.

Sexualization needs to create an environment where people feel free to express themselves without fear of reprisal - even though this may lead to laxity in following formal policies.

Sexualization can change workplace dynamics significantly by making some behaviors seem normal or even desirable despite official prohibitions. This makes rules less enforceable because many employees no longer consider them important enough to follow consistently. To avoid these problems, employers need to ensure that their policies remain relevant in today's society and maintain consistent enforcement regardless of external trends. They also need to provide a safe working environment for everyone regardless of their personal preferences or beliefs.

How might sexualized perception modify the perceived legitimacy of workplace rules, and how does this affect rule adherence?

The term "sexualization" refers to the act of reducing someone down to their gender/sex or sexual identity. When one person's appearance is judged by their physical attributes rather than their skills and abilities, it can create a power imbalance between them and their peers. This power imbalance may make individuals feel that they are not being treated equally.
