SEXUALIZED BEHAVIOR: HOW IT IMPACTS LEADERSHIP FAIRNESS AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN TEAMS

Sexualized behavior is an expression of one's sex drive that may take many forms such as kissing, touching, flirting, groping, making advances, suggestive remarks, and even going further to intercourse. It is commonly observed among team members who have strong ties through friendships, acquaintance, romantic or nonromantic relationships. Researchers have explored its impacts on team dynamics. This paper will discuss how sexualized behavior can influence team members' perception of leadership fairness and accountability.

Sexualized Behavior

Sexualized behavior often occurs during team activities or meetings when there are fewer supervisors present. Team members engage in it for several reasons like attraction, entertainment, boredom, or seeking validation from their leaders. In a study conducted by researchers Cynthia et al., Citation participants were asked to describe their workplace experiences related to sexualized behavior. They reported instances where they witnessed leaders having intimate relations with employees and subordinates, which affected team cohesion and productivity. In another study, Citation participants shared stories about leaders using sexual favors to punish employees who failed to complete tasks. These findings show that sexualized behavior has negative consequences that go beyond personal issues. Leaders must learn to manage it appropriately to avoid disruptions.

How Sexualized Behavior Affects Perception of Leadership Fairness

Leaders who indulge in sexualized behavior risk jeopardizing the trust, loyalty, and respect of team members. According to researchers Katherine et al., Citation, team members who experience favoritism due to sexual relations feel unfairly treated because they cannot compete equally. When team members perceive leadership as biased, they may become demotivated and look elsewhere for better opportunities.

Team members may resent one another if they suspect a leader is using sexuality to exploit them. This could lead to conflict, distrust, and poor communication, hindering the team's performance.

Leaders who fail to address sexualized behavior among team members may face legal action for creating a hostile work environment.

Sexualized behavior can negatively affect the perception of leadership fairness and accountability within teams. To mitigate its effects, leaders must establish clear policies on appropriate behavior and enforce them consistently. Team members should also be encouraged to report incidents promptly without fear of retaliation. By doing so, leaders create an inclusive environment where all team members are valued regardless of their relationship status with the leader.

How can sexualized behavior influence team members' perception of leadership fairness and accountability?

Sexualized behavior may negatively affect team member's perception of leadership fairness and accountability due to its potential to create an uncomfortable and distracting work environment that could undermine trust, mutual respect, and productivity. Furthermore, such behaviors may violate organizational policies and codes of conduct, leading to disciplinary action against leaders who engage in them.
