Sexualization is the process whereby people are presented as objects of desire or instruments for pleasure to be used to satisfy such desires, and wherein they can be seen primarily through their physical attributes. It occurs when people see others' bodies as sources of sexual gratification rather than respecting them as persons who possess agency and dignity. Sexualization distorts human relations and has negative consequences on the environment. Here, I will discuss how it affects ethics, corporate norms, and organizational culture.
Ethics:
Ethics is the branch of philosophy that deals with morality and principles that govern moral behavior. Sexualization influences ethics in various ways. Firstly, it encourages the objectification of individuals and treats them as commodities to be consumed for one's enjoyment or satisfaction. Secondly, it promotes an unhealthy perception of sex as something to be attained or earned. Thirdly, it leads to the development of misogynistic and gender biased views towards women and men. Fourthly, it creates power imbalances between people in relationships and makes sexual harassment a common occurrence. Fifthly, it leads to exploitation of vulnerable groups like children and animals, leading to child pornography, abuse, rape, and animal cruelty.
It increases violence against people who do not conform to societal beauty standards. These impacts lead to poor decision-making, increased conflicts, low self-esteem, and depression in people.
Corporate Norms:
Sexualization affects corporate norms by creating a hostile workplace where employees feel unsafe and uncomfortable. It is evident through increased rates of verbal and physical harassment, assault, and discrimination based on gender and appearance. Sexualized cultures promote competitiveness among colleagues and encourage employees to seek favor from managers using their bodies instead of talent and merits. This undermines trust, honesty, teamwork, and respect among coworkers. Sexualization also breeds inequality, disrespect, and distrust between superiors and subordinates. Managers often use sexual favors to advance in their careers and take advantage of employees' weaknesses. In addition, companies that fail to address this issue may face lawsuits, reputational damage, and losses due to poor productivity, absenteeism, and staff turnover. Companies must have policies that prohibit sexual jokes, touching, bullying, and sexually explicit content on the job to create safe spaces for all workers.
Organizational Culture:
The organizational culture refers to the beliefs, values, behaviors, and attitudes shared within an organization. Sexualization affects organizational culture negatively by promoting a perception of women as objects of desire rather than partners. This leads to decreased motivation, creativity, collaboration, and commitment at the workplace. Women are less likely to speak up or offer ideas when they feel objectified.
It makes people lose focus and energy on work tasks, resulting in low productivity, missed deadlines, errors, and defective products or services. Moreover, sexualization creates conflict between co-workers, especially those who view others differently. It leads to lower morale, high turnover rates, and frequent disciplinary actions like suspension and dismissal. Employees experience stress, depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, leading to reduced performance.
Companies with a negative work environment attract fewer qualified candidates because job seekers want to work in supportive environments where their needs are met without fear of exploitation.
In what ways does sexualized perception affect the ethical climate, corporate norms, and organizational culture?
Sexualized perception is known as an unconscious tendency of people to view others in terms of their gender, sex appeal, attractiveness, or sexual orientation rather than their character or competence. It is a common phenomenon that can negatively impact workplace dynamics due to biases, prejudice, stereotyping, discrimination, harassment, and misconduct.
