SEXUALIZATION AND GROUP PERFORMANCE: EXAMINING ITS EFFECT ON COMMUNICATION, PROBLEM SOLVING, AND DECISIONMAKING

The study examines the effect of sexualization on group dynamics. It is hypothesized that sexual attraction influences the way people perceive each other, their communication patterns, and the resulting problem-solving efficiency, conflict resolution, and decision-making processes. This phenomenon has been documented in various contexts, including political negotiations, academic teamwork, and professional collaboration.

There is limited empirical evidence supporting these findings. Therefore, it is necessary to explore whether and how sexualization affects group performance.

The researchers recruited participants from diverse backgrounds and randomly assigned them into groups. The experiment involved a series of tasks requiring creative problem solving and consensus building. The participants were asked to brainstorm ideas for promoting sustainability practices in a specific region and to agree upon an action plan for implementation. During this process, they discussed various proposals and strategies. Each participant completed self-report questionnaires measuring perceptions of the others' attractiveness and level of interest in sex.

The results revealed significant differences between groups based on the degree of sexualization present during the task. Groups where members perceived one another as more sexually desirable tended to have greater disagreement about solutions and slower progress toward consensus. They also reported lower levels of cooperation and less effective problem-solving strategies compared to the non-sexualized group. In contrast, teams with members who did not perceive one another as attractive exhibited higher rates of agreement and better outcomes.

These findings support the hypothesis that sexualized perceptions impede collaborative decision-making by introducing distractions and obstacles to the process. They suggest that when individuals are focused on their own or other people's physical appearance, they tend to prioritize personal needs over collective objectives and fail to engage productively with their teammates. This effect may be particularly pronounced in gendered environments, where men and women are likely to react differently to sexual cues. Further research is necessary to investigate how gender roles shape sexualized interactions within groups and how these effects can be mitigated through awareness and training.

The study provides important insights into how group dynamics are affected by sexual attraction. It suggests that sexualized perceptions may negatively impact collaboration and decision-making processes by disrupting communication patterns and reducing focus on shared goals.

This effect is complex and multifaceted, requiring further investigation to fully understand its causes and consequences.

To what degree does sexualized perception alter problem-solving efficiency, conflict resolution, and collaborative decision-making?

Sexualization is defined as the process by which persons are perceived primarily in terms of their sex characteristics and/or stereotypical gender roles (Abrams & Viki, 2016). A growing body of research has shown that sexualized perception may have negative impacts on problem-solving efficiency, conflict resolution, and collaborative decision-making because it can lead to prejudice and discrimination against individuals who do not fit into traditional gender norms.
