SEXUALITY, RELIGION, AND SEXUAL PLEASURE: CHILEAN YOUTH BREAKING TRADITIONS

2 min read Theology

Chile has always been considered a conservative country regarding issues such as sexuality, religion, marriage, family values, and gender roles.

Recent studies have shown that attitudes towards these topics are changing rapidly among young people. According to the latest survey conducted by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) in 2018, 91% of Chileans consider themselves Catholic and the Church is still very influential in society's views. Nevertheless, the religious aspect seems to be losing relevance compared to sociocultural factors, especially for young people who do not belong to this institution.

The mainstream discourse surrounding premarital sexual activity emphasizes abstinence until marriage, which is seen as the ideal pathway to avoid unwanted consequences like sexually transmitted diseases, teenage pregnancy, and promiscuity.

Many religious figures advocate for education about safe sex and contraception methods as an alternative way to protect one's health and prevent unplanned pregnancies. There is also an increasing awareness of sexual pleasure, intimacy, and body autonomy that challenges traditional moral norms.

In Chile, there is no legal age for consent, although it is recommended that minors must obtain parental permission before engaging in sexual activities. Premarital sex is generally frowned upon, but there is no law that prohibits or penalizes it. Some regions in the country, such as Los Ríos and Valparaíso, have implemented measures to promote comprehensive sexual education programs in schools.

Despite the diversity of beliefs and opinions, a general consensus emerges on the importance of respecting individual choices regarding sexual expression. The public debate around these issues has been quite open, with discussions on television shows, social networks, and educational institutions. This is largely due to the growing interest among younger generations in exploring their sexuality and questioning traditional values imposed by society and religion.

The cultural-religious discourse surrounding premarital sexual activity in Chile is complex and diverse, reflecting the changing attitudes towards gender roles, sexual morality, and family structures. While Catholicism still plays a significant role in shaping societal views, young people are increasingly pushing for more inclusive and tolerant perspectives, especially when it comes to promoting sexual rights and freedom.

What is the cultural-religious discourse in Chile surrounding the morality of premarital sexual activity?

Cultural beliefs about premarital sex differ between individuals from different regions of Chile. Some individuals may view it as immoral and unacceptable behavior while others may not hold strong opinions on the matter. The Catholic Church plays a significant role in shaping attitudes toward premarital sex within Chilean culture, although the level of influence varies depending on the individual's religious background.
