LGBTQ+ Inclusive Content. What is it?
LGBTQ+ Inclusive Content refers to media or materials that represent LGBTQ+ people in positive ways, such as in literature, movies, TV shows, music, social media, online forums, games, advertising, education, healthcare, workplaces, communities, and other areas where the public shares ideas and experiences. It includes any form of communication that addresses gender, romantic, and sexual identities, attraction, orientation, expression, and behavior.
Why does it matter?
Sexual minority adolescents have significantly lower self-esteem than their heterosexual peers due to the stigma around being non-heteronormative. They may feel excluded, marginalized, misunderstood, ashamed, fearful, lonely, depressed, anxious, angry, suicidal, and physically unsafe. Representation can change this. When they see themselves reflected positively in various media channels, it increases their sense of belongingness, acceptance, pride, comfort, confidence, hope, trust, security, optimism, and freedom.
What kind of impact has been observed so far?
Research shows that LGBTQ+ inclusive content improves how gay teens view themselves. It reduces self-stigma, promotes body image, helps them develop a more realistic perception of the world around them, improves mental wellbeing, and strengthens relationships with family members who are not supportive. It should be noted that representation matters more when it's nuanced, complex, unbiased, multifaceted, and age-appropriate. The effects vary from individual to individual and depend on other factors too.
How can we promote it further?
We can start by increasing representation of sexual minorities across all forms of communication, including digital platforms, schools, workplaces, communities, sports teams, libraries, religious groups, social events, medical institutions, government offices, etc. We can encourage educators to teach about gender diversity, offer safe spaces for discussions, provide access to resources and information, and showcase diverse role models. Adults can act as mentors or sponsors to LGBTQ+ youth and become allies for change. Social media influencers can spread awareness and create positive narratives. Parents can talk openly with kids, share stories, answer questions, and learn together. Policies can mandate inclusion and equality in hiring practices, marketing campaigns, public statements, product design, and other aspects.
