This viewpoint can be traced back to ancient Hebrew scripture, which states that "a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife," suggesting that monogamy is the ideal form of sexual expression. In addition, many religions believe that women should remain virgins until marriage, and sex outside of marriage is considered unclean.
Within some religious groups, such as Islam, this belief has been challenged by scholars who argue that men may marry multiple wives in order to satisfy their needs without committing adultery. Some Christian denominations also permit polygyny under certain circumstances, while others prohibit it entirely.

The Quran reinforces this idea, saying, "Do not approach prostitution - when you seek intimacy from anyone but your spouses."
The Hadith encourages Muslims to maintain chastity before marriage and fidelity afterwards. In short, religion views sex as an intimate act reserved only for marriage partners, and those who engage in premarital or extramarital sex are seen as morally inferior.
