Religious Teaching and Sexual Obedience

Sex is an essential part of human life. It can be pleasurable, meaningful, powerful, and sacred for some people.

It is also often associated with shame, guilt, secrecy, embarrassment, and sin for others. For many individuals, their personal attitudes towards sex are shaped by religious teachings they received from their parents, teachers, leaders, and communities when growing up.

The Bible says that sex should only happen within marriage between one man and one woman. It says that it's wrong to lust after someone who isn't your spouse. The Quran states that adultery is forbidden and punishable by death. In Buddhism, celibacy is encouraged, while Hinduism emphasizes faithfulness to one partner. Judaism advocates abstinence before marriage. Many religions believe that sex should only occur for procreation purposes.

Children grow up learning about these beliefs from their religious teachers. They internalize them as absolute truths because they are told they come from God or gods themselves. People may think that if they break these rules, they will go to hell or be excluded from society. As a result, they might feel guilty about having desires outside of marriage, sexual curiosity, and masturbating. They might also feel shame around topics such as contraception and abortion. They may struggle to understand the differences between consensual sex, abuse, and rape. Some people even try to suppress their sexuality altogether.

Some people find ways to balance their faith and their sexuality. They seek out supportive communities and resources to explore their sexuality in ways that align with their values. Others reinterpret scriptures to allow for more freedom in bedroom choices. Still, others reject religion entirely because they can't reconcile its teachings with their personal experiences. Religious teaching influences people's attitudes towards sex until later in life when they can decide whether to keep those beliefs or change them.

Religious teachings have long-term effects on how people view sex. It shapes people's values, behaviors, and relationships throughout their lives.

It doesn't always determine someone's actions or thoughts, especially if they choose to challenge or question it. It is essential to recognize the complexities of this topic to better understand oneself and others while forming healthy relationships.
