SEXUALITY IN MILITARY: HOW LGBT COUPLES COPE WITH RELATIONSHIP AMBIGUITY AND UNCERTAINTY (COPING STRATEGIES)

3 min read Lesbian

LGBT couples face unique challenges when it comes to navigating relationship ambiguities and uncertainties in high-threat military environments. These challenges can include concerns about privacy, discrimination, and even safety for their partner. To understand how LGBT couples cope with these challenges, researchers interviewed 12 LGBT service members who were deployed to Iraq between 2008 and 2014. The results showed that many couples employed strategies such as secrecy, avoidance, and support networks to manage relational ambiguity and uncertainty.

Secrecy was a common strategy used by participants. Many reported keeping their relationship secret from superiors and colleagues due to fear of repercussions. One participant said, "I didn't tell anyone I was dating someone while I was deployed because I knew that if they found out, it would have been bad for both of us." Another participant added, "We had to be very careful about what we did and where we went together." Some also chose to hide aspects of their sexuality or gender identity to maintain anonymity.

One participant explained, "When I first got to Iraq, I wasn't out yet, so I just told everyone I was straight."

Avoidance was another strategy used by some participants. This involved limiting contact with friends and family back home, avoiding social activities, and focusing on work. As one participant put it, "It was hard being away from my girlfriend but I tried not to think about her too much." Another participant explained, "I just tried to stay busy all the time. I couldn't let myself get caught up in thinking about our relationship." Some also avoided discussing their relationship with others, especially when they felt uncomfortable doing so.

Support networks were also important for many LGBT couples. Participants reported finding comfort and strength in online communities and other service members who shared similar experiences. One participant stated, "The people in my unit were really supportive - they would talk to me about my partner and ask how she was doing." Another participant noted, "There were a few gay guys in my platoon, and they helped me through tough times." Some even turned to religious groups for emotional support.

These findings highlight the complexities of navigating relational ambiguity and uncertainty in high-threat military environments for LGBT couples. While strategies such as secrecy and avoidance can help mitigate some of the risks associated with being openly queer in a hostile environment, they come at a cost. LGBT couples must balance safety concerns with the desire for connection and intimacy. With the right support network, however, LGBT couples can cope with these challenges and build strong relationships despite the unique circumstances they face.

How do LGBT couples navigate relational ambiguity and uncertainty in high-threat military environments?

LGBT individuals may experience unique challenges when navigating relationships within the context of a high-threat military environment due to social stigma and discrimination against their sexual orientation. This can lead to feelings of isolation, stress, and anxiety that may impact their mental health and wellbeing. Additionally, the constant threat of danger and potential for deployment can create an added layer of uncertainty and instability in their personal lives.
