SEXUALITY: HOW SOCIAL PRESSURE SHAPES SELFCONCEPT AND BEHAVIOR

4 min read Trans

The act of expressing one's sexual orientation, gender identity, and sexual practices has always been a subject of great controversy for many reasons. Social pressure is one factor that plays a significant role in shaping these factors. This study attempts to explore how social pressure affects individuals' sexual behavior, disclosure, and self-concept. In this article, I will delve into the different ways that social pressures influence people's perception of their sexuality, identify some key aspects of social pressure, and discuss how they can impact an individual's self-concept.

What is sexual behavior?

Sexual behavior refers to a person's expression of their sexuality through physical contact with another person. It encompasses all forms of sexual activity, including intercourse, masturbation, oral sex, anal sex, etc., which may be heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or asexual. It includes what kinds of activities someone engages in, when they occur, and who participates. Different cultures have varying norms about appropriate sexual behaviors based on religion, society, culture, or even family values.

In India, premarital sex is considered taboo and frowned upon by the general population.

Western countries tend to have more liberal attitudes towards casual sex as long as it is consensual and safe.

How does social pressure shape sexual behavior?

Social pressure shapes sexual behavior in various ways. One way is through peer pressure, where friends or colleagues encourage or discourage certain behaviors. Peer pressure encourages groupthink, making people feel like they must act similarly or risk being ostracized from their social circles.

Teenagers often feel compelled to engage in sexual acts because their peers do so. They might worry about losing their popularity if they don't conform to this expectation. Another way social pressure affects sexual behavior is through religious beliefs. Many religions dictate that individuals should only have sex within marriage and procreate for the continuation of life. People who follow these religious rules may view any form of non-procreative sex as immoral and unacceptable. As a result, some people may suppress their natural desires out of fear of punishment from God or others in their community.

What is disclosure?

Disclosure refers to revealing personal information about oneself, including one's sexual orientation, gender identity, and practices. It can be done privately or publicly and involves sharing intimate details with someone close to them, such as family members, partners, coworkers, or friends. Disclosing one's sexual orientation can be challenging due to societal stigma and prejudice against LGBTQ+ communities. Some people choose not to disclose their sexuality out of fear of rejection or judgment from society. Others may disclose it gradually over time and gauge how others respond before fully coming out.

How does social pressure shape disclosure?

Social pressure also plays a role in shaping an individual's decision on whether or not to disclose their sexual orientation/gender identity/sexual practices openly. In conservative societies, there is still significant stigma around homosexuality and transgenderism. Individuals who identify as gay or transgender may feel pressured into hiding their true selves to avoid being ostracized by family, friends, or colleagues.

Certain occupations require employees to keep their private lives hidden from colleagues, clients, and the general public.

Politicians often hide their sexual identities for political reasons.

What is self-concept?

Self-concept refers to an individual's perception of themselves, including their personality traits, abilities, beliefs, values, and attitudes. Social pressure affects this aspect too since it shapes our thoughts about ourselves based on what we believe others think of us. If someone feels like they must live up to certain expectations, they may internalize those ideas and view them as truthful, even if they are unrealistic or harmful. Self-doubt and low self-esteem can result from constant comparison with others leading to a negative self-image that interferes with healthy relationships and mental wellbeing.

How does social pressure impact self-concept?

If one has been taught that women should be subservient to men, then they may develop a self-concept of being inferior and unable to assert themselves in relationships. This can lead to codependency and abusive situations where they accept mistreatment from partners. Alternatively, if someone feels pressured to conform to societal beauty standards, they may develop body dysmorphia and resort to extreme measures like plastic surgery or dieting to achieve an idealized image. In either case, these individuals are likely to suffer from poor mental health due to insecurities about their appearance, behavior, or relationship dynamics.

What is the role of social pressure in shaping sexual behavior, disclosure, and self-concept?

The society has always had a strong influence on how individuals perceive themselves regarding their sexuality and how they behave sexually. Social pressure can shape one's sexual behavior, disclosure, and self-concept as it dictates what is considered acceptable and unacceptable within society's norms.
