SEXUALITY AND SPIRITUALITY: HOW REPEATING BEHAVIORS CAN ENHANCE INTIMACY

2 min read Theology

Repetition is often seen as boring and uninteresting.

It can be useful for some people to repeat certain behaviors in order to prepare them for more pleasurable activities in the future.

Someone who has never had sex before may practice masturbating multiple times in order to get used to the sensations and movements involved. Repeating the same behavior can also help build up muscle memory and increase coordination. This is similar to how athletes train for their sport. In fact, many professional athletes have coaches who put them through rigorous training routines that involve repeating the same motions over and over again.

Religious rituals can function as sublimated erotic rehearsal. Many religions include ritualized behaviors such as chanting, singing, and dancing that are repeated over and over again. These rituals can be seen as a form of sexual foreplay or even as a substitute for sexual activity. They can provide an outlet for sexual energy that might otherwise be expressed in more harmful ways.

Consider the Islamic tradition of sema. Sema is a dance performed by whirling dervishes who wear white robes and turbans and spin around in circles while reciting poems about love and spirituality. The dancers enter into a state of ecstasy and lose themselves in the rhythmic movement. Some scholars believe that this represents a kind of sexual release. In other words, the dancers are able to express their sexual desires through this religious ritual rather than engaging in actual intercourse.

Another example is the Hindu tradition of kirtan. Kirtan is a form of devotional singing that often involves repetitive chants and mantras. Like sema, it can induce a trance-like state where the participants feel connected to something greater than themselves. This connection can also be viewed as a form of intimacy.

Religious repetition can serve as a way to prepare individuals for future pleasurable activities, build up muscle memory, and provide an outlet for sexual energy. It is important to remember that not all religious practices are intended to be sexually charged, but some may function in this way.

It is worth considering how different cultures view these rituals and what they mean within their respective traditions.

Can religious repetition function as sublimated erotic rehearsal?

While it is possible that some individuals may use religious rituals as a means of sublimating their sexual desires, there is not sufficient evidence to suggest that this is a widespread phenomenon. There are many reasons why people engage in religious practices, such as seeking spiritual connection, social support, and personal growth, that have nothing to do with sexuality.
