SEXUALITY AND RELIGION: A LOOK AT HOW LGBT BELIEVERS CAN EMBRACE THEIR IDENTITY WHILE PRACTICING FAITH

3 min read Queer

LGBT individuals have always been part of human society and their experiences vary greatly from those who identify as straight.

Many members of this community still struggle to feel accepted and safe in religious settings, such as churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, and other places of worship. This is because some religions have historically denounced homosexuality and/or gender nonconformity, often condemning it as sinful or immoral. In recent years, there has been a growing movement among LGBT believers seeking to reconcile their faith with their identity, leading to a search for sacredness in everyday acts of authenticity and kindness.

The Bible is often cited as evidence against same-sex relationships, but a closer look reveals that many passages are taken out of context or misinterpreted.

In Genesis 19, God sends fire and brimstone down upon Sodom and Gomorrah after men try to sexually assault angels disguised as strangers. While the act was wrong, it had nothing to do with homosexuality per se; rather, it was about violating hospitality laws. Other passages, such as Leviticus 20:13, discuss ritual purity and not sexual orientation.

Jesus never mentioned homosexuality and taught love over judgment. With these insights in mind, many LGBT believers find comfort in creating their own spiritual practices that affirm their identities without compromising their beliefs.

One way this is done is through intentional kindness towards others, even those who may oppose them. Instead of lashing out at bigots or avoiding interactions altogether, LGBT individuals can choose to listen patiently to opposing views and offer empathy where possible. This approach creates space for understanding and connection, two qualities essential for true spiritual growth. In addition, LGBT people can practice mindfulness meditation, volunteering, self-care, and other activities that promote inner peace and well-being. These pursuits create a sense of wholeness within oneself, allowing them to experience sacredness even when society does not accept them fully.

Another important aspect of finding sacredness in everyday acts of authenticity is embracing one's identity without apology. Many LGBT individuals face pressure to hide or deny their sexuality/gender expression, but doing so leads to emotional turmoil and alienation from God. By living authentically, they demonstrate integrity and confidence, qualities prized by most religions. Moreover, accepting themselves allows them to form deep connections with others based on mutual respect and trust instead of fear or shame. The resulting intimacy can be seen as holy, a reflection of the divine love within each person.

LGBT believers can cultivate sacredness in their daily lives by celebrating beauty wherever it appears. Whether it is found in nature, art, music, relationships, or simply being alive, this appreciation reminds us that we are part of something greater than ourselves. It also demonstrates gratitude for our place in creation, which is often overlooked in a world obsessed with materialism and consumerism. With these practices, LGBT believers can find meaning, purpose, and fulfillment despite societal obstacles and religious prejudices.
