SEXUALITY AND INTIMACY: HOW RELIGION SHAPES OUR ATTITUDES TOWARDS IT?

Erotic Scripts

The term "erotic script" refers to the way people talk about sex, sexuality, intimacy, and relationships when they are aroused. Religious texts, sermons, teachings, and media can significantly influence these scripts.

Some religions consider that sex is evil or sinful outside marriage. These beliefs might lead people to believe that their bodies are dirty and shameful during masturbation, intercourse, or even holding hands with someone they love. As a result, religious communities often discourage public displays of affection and intimate behaviors like hugging and kissing. This restriction creates negative feelings towards one's own body and sexual desires.

It makes it difficult for individuals to learn how to communicate consent with partners, leading to unsafe practices.

Fantasies

Religious media also shapes erotic fantasies, which are thoughts and images that arise during arousal. Some religions promote monogamy, while others encourage polygamy.

There are no universal rules about what constitutes acceptable fantasy material.

Some Christians believe that same-sex sexual acts are immoral and should be avoided, while others accept them as long as they occur within marriage. Thus, LGBTQ+ individuals from Christian backgrounds may feel guilty or ashamed if they have any type of fantasy involving same-sex activity.

Religious groups vary in their views regarding BDSM, fetishes, and other kinks. Many view these interests as unnatural or deviant and warn against indulging in them.

Communicating Consent

Religious media influences the way people talk about consent during sexual interactions. Some religions assert that partners must always agree on everything before engaging in a sexual act. Others consider that women should never say 'no' because saying yes is a sign of submission and obedience. These teachings might lead to misunderstandings and abuse. Moreover, individuals raised in religious environments tend to view sex as sacred and taboo, making it hard to discuss issues like pleasure, boundaries, or safety. This reluctance can cause conflicts between couples when one partner wants more than another. It can even lead to non-consensual behaviors, such as groping or kissing without permission.
