SEXUALITY AND CULTURE: EXPLORING PREMARITAL INTIMACY AMONG ARMENIANS

2 min read Theology

The cultural context is important for understanding how Armenians view premarital sexuality. Most Armenians belong to the Armenian Apostolic Church, which strongly condemns any form of non-marital sexual expression. While there are some Armenians who identify as secular, they still hold traditional views about gender roles and sexual morality. Even among those who may be open to exploring their sexual desires outside marriage, there is often pressure from family members or community members to adhere to strict norms. This means that most Armenians who engage in premarital sexual activity do so secretly, behind closed doors.

Armenian religious teachings emphasize the importance of preserving virginity until marriage. Virginity is seen as a symbol of purity and chastity, and women who have been sexually active before marriage are considered damaged goods. Men who have had multiple partners prior to marrying an Armenian woman can face significant social stigma. As such, many Armenian parents pressure their children to wait until marriage to explore their sexuality, even though this can lead to feelings of shame and guilt.

There are also strict rules around sexual identity formation within Armenian culture. Homosexuality is widely viewed as immoral and deviant, with LGBTQ+ individuals facing discrimination and persecution. Transgender people face similar challenges, as well as difficulties finding resources and support. In recent years, there has been some progress toward acceptance, but overall attitudes remain conservative.

Armenian society is characterized by tightly controlled sexual norms and rigid gender roles. Premarital sex is generally frowned upon, and sexual exploration must take place in secrecy.

There are some exceptions to these norms, particularly among urban youth who identify more closely with Western values. Nevertheless, the legacy of traditionalism remains strong, making it difficult for Armenians to openly discuss their sexual desires or identities without fear of judgment.

How do Armenian religious teachings construct societal attitudes toward premarital sexual activity and sexual identity formation?

Armenian society has historically been characterized by conservative views on matters of sexuality, including premarital sex and sexual orientation. The Armenian Apostolic Church, which is the dominant religion in the country, has taught that sexual intercourse outside of marriage is a sin and has discouraged sexual behaviors not aimed at procreation.
