Sexual values refer to the ideas, beliefs, attitudes, norms, and practices related to human sexual behavior, desires, needs, and relationships between individuals. Interreligious intimacy involves two people who belong to different religious groups practicing some form of sexual activity together. As interfaith marriages become increasingly common worldwide, new sexual values are emerging that challenge traditional gender roles, sexual norms, and religious beliefs. In this essay, I will explore these new values through three lenses - individualistic, communal, and liberationist.
Individualistic Lens
The modern Western world is characterized by individualistic ideologies emphasizing personal autonomy, self-expression, and freedom. This lens views sexual values from an egocentric perspective, focusing on individual fulfillment, pleasure, and satisfaction rather than social or cultural norms. Individualists prioritize their own preferences and interests, regardless of society's expectations or religious teachings.
They may engage in premarital sex, same-sex relationships, polyamory, or non-monogamy. They also value body autonomy, consent, and non-judgmentality, allowing them to experiment with different sexual practices and identities without fear of judgment.
Communal Lens
The communal lens places greater emphasis on collective values, responsibilities, and obligations. Communal cultures believe that sex should be regulated and restricted for the good of the community as a whole. They view it as sacred, reserved only for marriage within their religion, and any deviation can lead to punishment or exclusion.
Interreligious intimacy challenges these restrictions by bringing two distinct communities together and creating new understandings of what constitutes a 'healthy' relationship. Communities must now grapple with how to integrate different perspectives on sexuality while still upholding their traditional beliefs.
Liberationist Lens
The liberationist lens advocates for sexual freedoms and equality, challenging both individualistic and communal approaches. It recognizes the importance of breaking free from oppressive structures and embracing diverse expressions of sexuality. Liberationists reject restrictive gender roles, heteronormativity, and homophobia, promoting inclusivity, empowerment, and self-determination. Interfaith intimacy offers an opportunity for liberationist couples to explore alternative forms of love and connection beyond social norms and religious expectations.
