Challenge preconceived notions about what is "normal"

Teens feel like they must act a certain way to be accepted by their friends, family members, or classmates. They might avoid discussing their sexuality altogether because they fear being ostracized or misunderstood. It is essential to challenge this mindset by educating yourself on different types of sexualities and genders. There is nothing wrong with being sexually fluid, bisexual, pansexual, nonbinary, queer, asexual, demisexual, polyamorous, kinky, or anything else! Understanding that there are many kinds of love and relationships allows you to break free from the idea that one type of person is better than another.

Speak up when someone makes assumptions about your sexuality

If someone assumes your sexual orientation based on how you look or dress, don't let them get away with it. Explain that your identity goes beyond physical appearance and that everyone should respect other people's privacy regardless of gender expression or attire. By doing so, you will empower yourself and encourage others to think critically before making judgements about anyone else's personal life. This can lead to more understanding between peers and create a safer space for all students at school.

Seek out support systems

If you find it difficult to navigate conversations about sexuality with your parents, guardians, or teachers, seek out trusted adults who can provide guidance and emotional support without passing judgment. LGBTQ+ organizations offer resources for teens struggling to accept themselves in a heteronormative society. There are also online communities where teens can connect with like-minded individuals for advice and socialization. By surrounding yourself with those who understand what you're going through, you can feel less alone and more confident in expressing your true self.

Educate your friends

Teenagers often absorb messages from media and popular culture that perpetuate harmful stereotypes about race, gender, class, body type, ability level, etc. You can help change this narrative by educating your friends on these issues. Share articles or videos about the importance of consent, safe sex practices, and healthy relationships. Make sure everyone in your group knows that no means no - even if someone is intoxicated or dressed provocatively. It's essential to have open dialogue about how we view each other as individuals rather than objects of desire.

Practice self-care

Pressure to conform comes not just from external sources but also from within ourselves. It's easy to feel ashamed of our own bodies or experiences if we don't fit neatly into traditional boxes. Self-care strategies such as exercise, meditation, journaling, therapy, or talking with loved ones can all boost mental wellbeing. By taking care of our physical and emotional needs, we become better equipped to handle stressors related to sexuality and identity. Remember: YOU ARE ENOUGH!
