Men who like being dominated by women might find themselves at odds with what society expects them to do. Likewise, lesbian couples reject heteronormativity, but still need to navigate issues related to gender power dynamics within their relationships.

Parents may encourage hetero pairings over queer ones even when children feel differently. This can lead to friction between generations as well as internalized shame about being different. People with non-traditional identities risk losing support networks which affects mental health outcomes.

Groups like kink or polyamory offer alternatives to conventional monogamy through experimentation and exploration. People in such groups have found acceptance and understanding outside mainstream attitudes toward intimacy.
