SEXUAL ORIENTATION DISCLOSURE AND RELATIONSHIP OPENESS: IMPACT OF PEER SUPPORT IN MILITARY UNITS

2 min read Lesbian

The study examined how perceived peer support influences disclosure of sexual orientation and relational openness in military units. Participants were recruited from various military bases across the United States and were asked to complete an anonymous survey that included measures related to their experiences with peers' attitudes toward LGBTQ individuals, their own self-esteem, and their willingness to disclose their sexual orientation and engage in romantic relationships within their unit. The results indicated that those who felt more supported by their peers were more likely to disclose their sexual orientation and enter into romantic relationships than those who did not feel supported. This suggests that creating a culture of acceptance and understanding within military units can help foster positive outcomes for LGBTQ service members. In addition, this study highlights the importance of including diversity training as part of military education and training programs to reduce stigma and promote inclusivity. The findings have implications for policy and practice, as they underscore the need for continued efforts to create welcoming environments for all service members, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The study provides valuable insights into the impact of peer support on disclosure of sexual orientation and relational openness in military units. By examining how perceived peer support affects these factors, it sheds light on the importance of promoting acceptance and understanding within military settings. The findings suggest that creating a culture of inclusion and acceptance is critical for ensuring the wellbeing and success of LGBTQ service members, and that diverse training should be incorporated into military education and training programs. As such, future research could focus on exploring additional aspects of peer support, such as its influence on other types of disclosures (e.g., mental health), and examining interventions aimed at increasing peer support among military personnel.

How does perceived peer support influence disclosure of sexual orientation and relational openness in military units?

The research indicates that perceived peer support has a significant impact on the level of comfort with which individuals disclose their sexual orientation and relational openness within military units.
