SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND GENDER IDENTITY: THE IMPORTANCE OF EQUALITY

2 min read Lesbian

Is equality a matter of moral entitlement or existential validation for LGBTQ+ individuals?

The answer to this question is both yes and no. On one hand, it's important that all people are treated equally regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity because everyone deserves equal rights under the law.

On the other hand, there is something deeper than just the legal aspect that makes being an LGBTQ+ person important - they have a unique experience that must be validated and acknowledged.

Equality as Moral Entitlement

Equality is a fundamental human right that should be afforded to every individual without exception. It means that each person has the same freedoms and opportunities available to them regardless of their personal characteristics such as race, religion, or gender identity. This includes access to education, employment, housing, healthcare, and political participation.

From a moral perspective, some may argue that LGBTQ+ individuals don't need additional recognition beyond these basic rights. After all, if someone is denied their basic rights due to discrimination based on their sexuality or gender identity then that's wrong in itself - why should anything else be required?

Existential Validation

But for many members of the community who struggle with self-acceptance and societal rejection throughout their lives, simply having equal rights isn't enough. They seek acceptance and validation not only within the law but also culturally.

When a straight cisgender person falls in love with another straight cisgender person, society doesn't necessarily interfere with that relationship. But if two gay people try to express their feelings for one another, it can often lead to social stigmatization and even violence.

It's important for us as individuals to challenge our own biases against queer identities and recognize that being gay or transgender isn't just about sex but rather an intrinsic part of someone's identity. We must work towards creating spaces where everyone feels comfortable being themselves authentically without fear of judgment or condemnation. Only then will we truly achieve equality for all people no matter how they identify.

Is equality a matter of moral entitlement or existential validation for LGBTQ+ individuals?

Although the concept of equality is often associated with rights and privileges, it can also be seen as a sense of validation and belongingness for LGBTQ+ individuals. From an evolutionary perspective, many species exhibit behavioral variations that deviate from typical gender norms. In this context, there may be some intrinsic value in being part of a group that accepts non-conformity to societal standards of sexual orientation and gender identity.
