SEXUAL INTIMACY IN THE BISEXUAL COMMUNITY: OVERCOMING CHALLENGES AND BEATING SOCIETYS STIGMAS

3 min read Bisexual

Bisexual individuals are people who experience romantic and/or sexual attraction to multiple genders. This can be male, female, nonbinary, transgender, genderqueer, agender, androgynous, intersex, or any combination thereof. Many bisexual people face discrimination from both homophobic and heteronormative societies because they do not fit neatly into either category. In addition, bisexuality is often seen as less legitimate than gay or straight identities due to the belief that it is "greedy" or "promiscuous". This stigma creates a stressful environment for bisexuals, which can make it challenging to maintain inner peace.

Challenges Bisexual People Face

One challenge bisexuals encounter is the pressure to choose one side or the other. Society expects them to declare their preference for either men or women, and those who identify as 'bi' are sometimes viewed as indecisive. This can lead to feelings of confusion and self-doubt. Other challenges include misconceptions about bisexuality itself - such as the idea that bisexuals cannot be monogamous or that bisexuality is simply a phase of development towards full LGBTQIA+ identity. Some bi-identified individuals may also struggle with internalized homophobia or fear of being rejected by family and friends if they come out publicly.

Self-Care Practices for Inner Peace

To maintain mental wellness while navigating these issues, bisexual people must take care of themselves physically, emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically. Physical practices like exercise, meditation, yoga, or massage can help alleviate stress hormones in the body and promote relaxation. Emotionally, journaling, therapy, or support groups can provide an outlet for expressing difficult emotions without judgement from others. Spiritually, prayer, ritual, or mindfulness exercises can connect us with our deeper selves and foster a sense of groundedness. Psychologically, positive affirmations, gratitude practices, cognitive behavioral therapy, or reframing negative thoughts into more productive ones can shift our perspective towards more positivity.

Finding Community Support

Connecting with other bisexuals through online communities or local meetups can offer a sense of belonging and acceptance. These spaces allow bisexual people to share their experiences and learn from one another's perspectives. Social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Reddit, and YouTube are great places to find information and resources about bisexuality. Bisexual organizations exist worldwide, including BiNet USA, LGBT Foundation, Bi Visibility Day, and the National Alliance for Bi+ Equality (NABE). These groups often host events such as marches, conferences, workshops, seminars, lectures, book clubs, movie nights, and social gatherings that aim to educate the public about bisexual issues while creating a safe space for bi individuals to thrive.

How do bisexual individuals maintain inner peace while existing in a society that often questions their reality?

Bisexuals must work hard to accept themselves as they are and understand their sexual orientation before others can begin to truly respect it. They should strive to educate themselves about all aspects of bisexuality, including its history and culture, which may help them find support groups where other bisexual people share similar beliefs and experiences.
