SEXUAL INTIMACY: HOW BELIEVERS ACCOMMODATE RELIGIOUS TEACHINGS IN THEIR PRIVATE LIVES

2 min read Theology

Religious teachings have always been perceived differently by different people according to their own personal beliefs and experiences.

Many individuals who follow a particular religion tend to interpret its teachings in such a way that they can be applied to their private lives, including their sexual practices. This process of interpreting and reinterpreting religious teachings to suit one's needs is known as "accommodation."

One common example of this practice is when believers apply scriptural passages about marriage to their own relationships, even if they are not married or do not plan to get married.

Some Christians believe that sex outside of marriage is sinful and wrong, but still engage in it for various reasons such as physical desire or pleasure. To justify their actions, they may cite verses from the Bible that talk about loving your partner unconditionally and being faithful until death, without mentioning marriage. This allows them to continue practicing intimacy while maintaining their faith and following what they see as God's will.

Muslims often take verses from the Quran and Hadith that speak against homosexuality and adultery to condemn same-sex relationships and extramarital affairs. But some individuals may choose to read those verses metaphorically, claiming that they refer to spiritual or emotional infidelities rather than physical ones. They may also argue that Allah has no problem with consensual non-procreative relationships between two men or women, so long as they are committed to each other and respectful of others' privacy.

In addition to accommodating private sexual practices, many religions have been adapted by LGBTQ+ people who feel marginalized within their communities due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. Some interpretations of these teachings allow for alternative lifestyles, such as same-sex marriages, polyamorous relationships, and transgenderism. The idea here is that all people deserve love and acceptance regardless of how they express themselves sexually or romantically.

Religious accommodation can be a powerful tool for believers to reconcile their personal values with traditional teachings on morality. It allows them to find meaning in what might seem like a contradiction, while still feeling connected to their faith and community.

Critics argue that this practice can lead to moral relativism and even undermine the foundational principles of certain religions.
