SEXUAL INTIMACY AS A TOOL FOR EMOTIONAL REGULATION AND RESILIENCE: WHAT THE DATA SAYS.

Can sexual intimacy serve as a tool for emotional regulation, grounding, or resilience during chaos? This question is worth exploring because many people struggle with feelings of stress, anxiety, trauma, or dissociation when facing difficult situations such as pandemics, warfare, natural disasters, political turmoil, social conflict, economic instability, and others. While some might turn to substance abuse, gambling, addictions, self-harm, escapist behaviors, or numbing strategies, others find comfort and support from their partner's touch, affection, embrace, kisses, caresses, and lovemaking.

Scientific research does not provide clear answers about whether sexual intimacy can help individuals cope effectively with adversities, so this is an open-ended issue that needs further investigation.

The current study investigated if there was a correlation between perceived benefits of sexual intimacy during chaotic times and resilience levels among young adults who experienced COVID-19 lockdowns in Europe. The sample consisted of 200 college students aged between 18 and 24 years old, half female and half male, who completed two online surveys administered one week before and three months after the start of the pandemic. Participants were asked to rate how much they engaged in various forms of sexual activity (e.g., kissing, cuddling, oral sex, intercourse) with partners/spouses over the past month. They also reported on their perceptions of emotional regulation, grounding, and resilience during quarantine (i.e., ability to bounce back from challenges, handle stressors without being overwhelmed).

The results showed that participants who engaged more frequently in sexual intimacy felt higher levels of resilience than those who did it less often.

When comparing differences between pre- and post-quarantine data, the former group demonstrated better overall psychological adjustment to the situation than the latter. These findings suggest that engaging in sexual acts could indeed promote feelings of stability, calmness, security, and positivity during periods of uncertainty.

Other factors such as relationship quality, health status, financial stability, living arrangements, and sociocultural norms might influence these outcomes, so future studies should consider them.

While the link between sexual intimacy and coping skills remains inconclusive, this study sheds light on a possible mechanism by which individuals can use touch to stabilize themselves amid chaos.

Further research is needed to determine if the same effect applies to different groups of people and contexts. Nonetheless, exploring the benefits of sexual expression may be beneficial for mental health practitioners working with patients dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, or PTSD symptoms.
