SEXUAL INTERCOURSE: HOW LIBERAL AMERICAN MUSLIMS RECONCILE RELIGIOUS ADHERENCE WITH CONTRACEPTION

Sexual intercourse is an integral part of human life. It has always been a subject of controversy in various cultures across the globe.

It is more taboo than ever in conservative Islamic societies. Conservative Islamic societies strictly prohibit intercourse outside marriage, premarital sex, homosexuality, masturbation, and even contraceptive use. Such conservative Muslims believe that these actions are sins according to their religion. On the contrary, liberal American Muslims have different views about this matter. They hold a more moderate viewpoint than their conservative counterparts. They allow for these activities but within certain limitations. This article will discuss how liberal American Muslims reconcile religious adherence with sexual autonomy and relational ethics regarding contraception.

Liberal Muslims believe that women should be able to enjoy sex without feeling guilty or ashamed. They argue that men and women should be allowed to take control of their bodies through self-pleasure. In addition, they believe that couples should engage in sexual activities after having discussed the pros and cons of using birth control methods such as condoms or the pill. The decision to use or not to use contraceptives lies in the hands of both parties involved in the relationship. If one party insists on abstaining from the use of any method, the other partner may feel coerced into doing so. Thus, consent becomes a crucial factor when making decisions about contraception between partners.

Liberals accept abortion as an option in case of unplanned pregnancies while in others; they discourage it because it violates the sanctity of life. Moreover, some liberal Muslims think that abortion is only acceptable if there is a medical reason behind it, like a threat to the mother's health. They believe that life begins at conception, and thus, abortion is considered murder. Still, they accept exceptions like rape or incest since they are out of the couple's control. Nevertheless, they do not encourage couples to have abortions unless under exceptional circumstances. Therefore, they promote preventive measures such as abstinence or using contraceptives.

Liberal American Muslims acknowledge that sex is more than just a physical act but also a spiritual connection between two individuals. According to them, relationships are based on love and commitment rather than lust. This means that people can enjoy their partner intimately without guilt.

They still maintain their religious beliefs by refraining from adultery and fornication, which they consider immoral acts. To sum up, sexual autonomy, relational ethics, and religious adherence should be reconciled through communication, compromise, and respect for each other's views.

In liberal American Muslim contexts, how are sexual taboos regarding contraception reconciled with religious adherence, sexual autonomy, and relational ethics?

Sexual taboos regarding contraception have been historically rooted within Islamic tradition as a means of preserving family honor and maintaining moral decency; however, liberal American Muslims may find themselves navigating these challenges differently than their conservative counterparts due to a variety of social, cultural, and technological factors. While some Muslims still view contraceptives as immoral and contrary to religious teaching, many contemporary Muslims consider them necessary for responsible reproductive health practices.
