SEXUAL IDENTITY IN PAKISTAN: HIJRAS AND THEIR SENSE OF COMMUNITY

2 min read Trans

Pakistan is a country where many cultures coexist together harmoniously. One such culture is that of Hijras, a community of people who identify themselves as neither male nor female but possess qualities of both genders. Their presence can be traced back to ancient times when they were revered for their ability to bless couples seeking fertility and protect them against evil spirits.

Despite this rich history, today they face stigma, discrimination, and exclusion from religious institutions.

The hijras' gender identity is sanctioned by God Almighty, according to their belief system. They believe that God created them as an intermediary between the divine and human worlds. This belief gives them confidence to navigate through social challenges without feeling inferior. The hijra community has its own language, customs, and traditions which are deeply rooted in their way of life. They have their own rituals and ceremonies like the Kothi ceremony, where young men are initiated into their group after undergoing surgery to remove their testicles. They also have their own songs and dances during festivals and weddings.

Despite their strong sense of community, they continue to experience stigma and discrimination. Religious institutions deny them access to temples, mosques, and other places of worship due to their perceived status as sinners. This rejection further adds to the pain and isolation that they already feel from society at large. In addition, they often face physical violence, sexual abuse, and economic exploitation because of their marginalized status.

Despite these struggles, hijras find solace in their religion and culture. They seek comfort in their faith and in each other. They maintain a strong bond with their families and communities, supporting one another emotionally and financially. Their resilience and strength have inspired many people across Pakistan, who now advocate for their rights and dignity.

While Pakistani hijras may face social stigma, exclusion, and discrimination, their gender identity remains divinely sanctioned. They rely on their faith and cultural heritage to cope with this adversity. It is time for religious leaders and government officials to recognize their unique needs and provide them with the resources they need to live fulfilling lives.
