SEXUAL EXPECTATIONS VS MORALITY: A COMPARISON BETWEEN NAVARATRI AND LENT

Religious festivals are often associated with sexual activities, whether explicitly or implicitly.

These festivals have strict rules that regulate who can participate and how they can behave. In some cases, such as Hindu festivals, there is a specific time when people can express their sexual desires without breaking moral codes. This phenomenon has been studied extensively in anthropology to explain why some cultures accept it while others do not.

The most famous example of seasonal sexuality in religious festivals is Navaratri, an Indian festival dedicated to the goddess Durga. During this time, women dress provocatively and men offer them gifts in exchange for sexual favors. The festival is also known for its elaborate rituals involving dancing, music, and food. In many parts of India, including Kolkata, Bengali women celebrate Dussehra by performing traditional dances called 'dandiya' and 'garba.' These dances involve couples dancing together in close proximity to each other, which is considered taboo in everyday life.

Another example is the Christian festival of Lent, during which believers give up something they enjoy. Some people choose to abstain from alcohol or meat but others go further and avoid sex altogether. This practice goes back thousands of years and is still observed today. It was originally meant to prepare people for Easter by reminding them of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. But nowadays, it seems like a way to test one's commitment to religion and morality.

In Islamic culture, Ramadan includes fasting from sunrise until sunset, which often means abstaining from physical contact with spouses.

Muslims believe that Allah will forgive their sins if they break their fast with prayer and charitable acts. This belief led to the creation of 'Night of Power,' a special night when people can engage in any form of physical intimacy without feeling guilty.

Seasonal sexuality in religious festivals challenges everyday moral restrictions by allowing people to express themselves freely while keeping within cultural norms.

Some critics argue that this behavior undermines the core values of these religions. They say that these festivals encourage promiscuity and hedonism instead of piety and self-control. Others see it as an opportunity to explore new relationships or experiment with different types of sexual expression.
