SEXUAL AUTONOMY IN A SOCIETY OF JUDGEMENTAL RELIGIOUS VIEWS AND TABOO SEXUAL BEHAVIORS

2 min read Queer

Sexual autonomy refers to an individual's ability to make informed decisions about their own body, desires, and actions related to sexual activity. It involves having control over one's own sexual experiences and being able to express those experiences without fear of judgment or shame. Religious teachings have historically played a significant role in shaping societal attitudes towards sex, often reinforcing beliefs that promote abstinence until marriage and condemn premarital sex as sinful. This can lead to stigmas around non-traditional forms of sexual expression such as polyamory, BDSM, and homosexuality, which may limit individuals' freedom to explore their sexuality outside of heteronormative norms.

Social stigma against these activities can also stem from cultural expectations of what is considered acceptable behavior within particular communities or families.

Some cultures may view promiscuous behavior as shameful, while others may view it as a symbol of wealth or power. These expectations can create a sense of pressure on individuals to conform to certain standards of conduct, making it difficult for them to feel comfortable exploring their true desires.

Social media has become increasingly influential in shaping perceptions of sexuality, with many people turning to online platforms like Instagram and TikTok for guidance on how to act sexually. While this may increase access to information and community, it can also perpetuate unrealistic beauty standards and fetishization that may further limit sexual autonomy by encouraging self-objectification and objectifying behaviors.

Both religious teachings and social stigma can impact an individual's ability to achieve sexual autonomy and trust in relationships. By normalizing different expressions of sexuality and recognizing the importance of safe, consensual communication between partners, we can work towards creating a more inclusive and accepting society that values sexual wellbeing.
