Survivors of high-control religious systems often experience difficulties regaining their sense of self and recovering from trauma associated with controlling behaviors. These individuals may have been subject to manipulation, gaslighting, shaming, brainwashing, and abuse that has left them feeling powerless, confused, and disconnected from their bodies, desires, and relationships. Recovering from such experiences requires more than just therapy; it involves reconnecting with one's own sensuality, sexuality, and relational needs. This process can be challenging but possible through several strategies and steps outlined below.

Identify and Reframe Thought Patterns

Survivors must identify harmful thought patterns instilled during their time in the system. They may have internalized ideas about sex as sinful, shameful, dangerous, or even non-existent. To counter these negative thoughts, they should engage in positive self-talk and affirmations that emphasize healthy sexuality and intimacy. By recognizing and addressing harmful beliefs, they can begin to reclaim ownership over their erotic agency.

Connect with Their Body

The second step is reconnecting with their body. Survivors may feel disembodied after experiencing physical and emotional control for an extended period. Practicing grounding exercises and mindfulness techniques can help them become aware of their body and its sensations.

Practicing self-care activities such as meditation, yoga, massages, or exercise can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and enhance well-being.

Explore Pleasure and Desire

Once connected to their body, survivors should explore pleasure and desire. They can start by setting boundaries around what feels comfortable and safe while experimenting with different forms of touch, sounds, smells, and visual stimulation. Through this exploration, they may discover new preferences, interests, and desires. It's essential not to rush this process; take time to learn and grow at a pace that works for you.

Build Relational Trust

As survivors explore their bodies and desires, they must also build relational trust. This involves finding partners who respect their needs, communicate openly and honestly, and create safe spaces for vulnerability and connection. Building trust requires patience, commitment, and willingness to compromise and adapt.

Reclaim Relational Confidence

The last step is reclaiming relational confidence. This can be challenging since many survivors have experienced trauma in relationships and may struggle to believe they are worthy of love and intimacy. To regain confidence, they should focus on positive affirmations, therapy, self-care, and healthy relationship practices like boundary-setting and communication skills. With patience and persistence, survivors can reconnect with their sexuality, intimacy, and sense of self.

While regaining erotic agency, intimacy, and relational confidence after leaving high-control religious systems may seem daunting, these steps provide a path toward healing and empowerment. Remember, everyone's journey is unique, but taking these first steps can help you start moving forward towards a fulfilling and authentic life.
