RELIGIOUS SEXUAL PROHIBITIONS IN PRISONS: HOW INMATES PRACTICE THEIR BELIEFS DESPITE RESTRICTIONS

2 min read Theology

Many people who are incarcerated have been stripped of their basic rights and freedoms, including the ability to pursue romantic relationships or express themselves sexually.

Despite these restrictions, some prisoners continue to find ways to connect with others physically and spiritually. In this article, I will explore how inmates interpret and practice religious sexual prohibitions while imprisoned.

Religious Sexual Prohibitions in Prisons

Religions often have rules about sexual behavior that prisoners must follow.

Islam forbids adultery, incest, and homosexuality, while Christianity discourages premarital sex, pornography, and masturbation. Some religions also dictate specific clothing requirements for men and women. These strictures can create tension between religious beliefs and prison life.

Interpreting Religious Laws in Prison

Prisoners may reinterpret religious laws to fit their current circumstances. They may argue that certain acts are permissible within marriage, even if they are normally forbidden outside it. They may also justify sexual interactions based on emotional connection or personal needs.

A Muslim prisoner might believe that kissing is acceptable as long as there is no genital contact.

Prayer and Meditation

Some prisoners turn to prayer and meditation to cope with sexual urges. They may use scripture to remind themselves of God's love and forgiveness. This approach can be comforting but may not fully address underlying issues like loneliness or boredom.

Some prisons restrict access to religious materials or require prisoners to purchase them at high prices.

Sexual Intimacy and Relationships

Inmates may form relationships with other prisoners who share their beliefs and values. They may exchange letters, pray together, or engage in conversation about spiritual topics.

Physical intimacy is usually prohibited by prison regulations. Some prisoners find creative ways around this restriction, such as touching each other through bars or writing erotic messages.

Despite the challenges posed by confinement, many prisoners continue to practice their faith and express themselves sexually. By understanding how prisoners interpret religious laws and navigate their daily lives, we can better support them during incarceration and after release.

How do inmates reinterpret religious sexual prohibitions under conditions of confinement?

Incarceration can bring about radical changes in an individual's life, including their beliefs and perceptions of the world around them. It is not uncommon for inmates to reinterpret religious sexual prohibitions when faced with limited opportunities outside of prison walls. Inmate may view these prohibitions as outdated or irrelevant given the circumstances they find themselves in.
