RELIGIONS CAN HINDER SEXUAL EQUALITY BY TEACHING MEN SUPERIORITY OVER WOMEN

3 min read Theology

Religious teachings often state that men have more rights to sexual access than women, but these ideas can negatively impact women's views on sexual equality and intimacy. While some believe this is an essential way to maintain control and dominance over their partners, it can lead to problems within the relationship and society overall.

Religions like Christianity, Islam, and Judaism preach that women are inferior to men and must be submissive in all areas, including sexually. This means that wives should satisfy their husbands' physical needs without expecting anything in return.

The Bible states, "The husband must provide for his wife, while the wife submits herself graciously to her husband" (Ephesians 5:28). Similarly, Islamic laws allow husbands to engage in polygamy if they can support multiple wives financially.

Women cannot demand equal treatment from their spouses or even refuse unwanted advances.

These beliefs can cause women to view themselves as less important or valuable than men, leading them to accept unequal treatment in other aspects of life. They may internalize messages suggesting that they are not deserving of respect or love outside of sexual encounters with their partner. Women may also become resentful towards men who take advantage of their power, creating tension within relationships and families.

Religious normalization of unequal sexual access reinforces patriarchal norms that objectify women's bodies and devalue their emotional needs.

Such teachings can perpetuate gender inequality by making it seem natural or acceptable for men to have more sexual freedom than women. In some cultures, this leads to "honor killings" when a woman refuses to comply with her family's wishes regarding marriage or sexuality. Men may see women as property rather than individuals capable of independent thought and action. This mindset creates an unhealthy environment wherein women are treated like objects instead of human beings worthy of dignity and respect.

Promoting these ideas promotes rape culture by giving men permission to act on their desires without considering the impact on victims' lives.

The effects of religious normalization of unequal sexual access can extend beyond individual relationships into society at large. When young girls witness adults reinforcing these harmful ideals, it creates a cycle of abuse that perpetuates oppression. It is crucial to recognize how such beliefs contribute to misogyny, racism, classism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination against marginalized groups. Without addressing these issues head-on, we will continue seeing widespread injustice based solely upon gender identity or expression.
